Mecha genre can have great stories. Gundam, Code Geass, Macross, Neon Genesis Evangelion Etc. (They can be way deeper than what Hollywood does with them) It is just that Hollywood haven't treated the genre with respect because of Transformers. Most of Hollywood producer think that anything with giant robots are dumb B movie action title. Until someone put depth and complex stories into these movies, this genre is going be stuck with this reputation.

Sherwin Lui Pacific Rim: Uprising seems like a big budget B-movie from the way they described this movie.
@chrisheimva48576 жыл бұрын
That was probably my biggest gripe with the first Pacific Rim. While it is better than the Transformers movies, it's not by much. I felt it couldn't decide whether it wanted to be a Gurran Lagan-style "screw all logic let's have fun" action flick or a serious Macross-style war epic. It ended up in the that awkward middle where the action may be cool but there wasn't much else to latch on to. If story isn't going to be important, then give me plenty of action to distract me. If not, then really work on your story and characters so I'm invested. A lot of times in the greatest of mecha series it's the parts in between the battles that matter the most.
@brucebanana44866 жыл бұрын
Sherwin Lui, the thing with mecha comes to Hollywood is that not many demands for it.
@sherwinlui57586 жыл бұрын
Bruce Banana There was demand for mecha in Hollywood after Transformer became a big hit. It made money even if it was bad. Image how much it made if it was good. The problem was no one really fill in the gap with a more serious type mecha series. We won't know if the masses would like a more serious type mecha show if the reputation of mecha was not hinder by Transformers.

The Chinese is there to pander to the Chinese, but that's because a Chinese company is behind this film too. At least the Chinese characters got more prescence than they did in Iron man 3, Transformers, or even the first Pacific Rim. This movie is a sham though, it is a testement to not understanding the first movie and thinking it was just giant robots fighting giant monsters, and no nuance or detail added in.

I agree with most of your points, except for the stuff about the "story getting in the way." I thought the story was simple, easy to follow, and well-paced. The story didn't get in the way because it gave context to the situation and reasons for why they're fighting. The movie didn't feel slow or dragged out in any way, and there were plenty of good fight scenes every 10 minutes or so to keep the audience entertained. This movie actually went by pretty quickly IMO.
@Dookieman1975 Жыл бұрын
If anything the problem is the story just not being very good. Characters are worse, choreography is worse with overusing certain camera angles, just a lot of stuff so much worse. It’s basically fanfic tier. Hell the conflict feels pretty forced and sloppy because the first one ended in a way where there won’t be a sequel. All it really has is cool action. At least the first movie showed us the history between characters like the becket brothers and mako and stacker instead of just saying it like Jake and Nathan
@WushuKnight196 жыл бұрын
At least in that fight scene in Man of Steel, Superman was getting his ass kicked and tossed around most of the time. Zod was the one causing destruction. That part where Zod knocked Superman down on the floor was where Superman was destracted by the explosion. That along shows Superman cares more about civilians than the Yaegars did in this movie.

The movie turns 5 today! More mixed reviews than the first movie I got more into this one than the last one; the human characters are far more interesting and they don't feel like a distraction next to the giant robots You're not staring at your watch waiting for the next big fight to happen The action scenes are still neat to look at with more Jaegars and Kaijus to boot There's also a clever twist in here I did not see coming tying back to the first film John Boyega is a more engaging protagonist with a lot of charm and wit The final battle is also a dream come true for action lovers who are looking for giant monsters and robots duking it out The mid credits scene paved the way open for another installment but who knows if it ever comes Director Steven S. DeKnight makes things fast paced, exciting, and simple to understand this time around A lot of stuff is bland particularly some of the writing but it's not a chore to sit through because it gets to the good stuff quick while expanding its world

The complaints they have for this film are ridiculous. This is a sequel to a *Giant Robots vs Monster* movie, this isn't supposed to be *Citizen Kane.* Individuals who are going to see this movie aren't expecting to see any highbrow film, we are expecting to see HUGE Robots fight Giant Monsters, and destroying cities while doing it.

The film really isn't incoherent at all. It's wafer-thin and a bit forced but all of the plot elements are stated in there and make sense. They even set it up early in the film for some of it. I mean, there's just enough of the story to make the film work. Cutting anything else out would have really made the film incoherent. It's not great but it's serviceable. I will agree with being disappointed that they didn't take the universe further because the first part of the movie looked it was going to do that. I agree with Martin's analysis of this being a season of anime condensed into a 2 hour movie. It actually lifts its plot from another anime movie, in fact. Overall though, I'd rate it higher. The characters are enjoyable enough and the story doesn't bog it down enough to be a problem. The action is great throughout I love the personality in the robots themselves. I'd say the film is a high rental-low matinee for sure. I don't understand the tangent about destruction at the start of the video though. The film doesn't really focus on it and it's mostly there so it doesn't seem weird that the city is always already evacuated and the like. There are robot series that deal with the collateral damage as part of the story very well but this film definitely is meant to be a slightly shlocky action film and wasn't going to be touching that much.

As a huge fan of the first one and after watching the second one today, in an empty theater, I have to say: -In terms of the hype/"yeah,we gonna get them aliens bruh" type of vibe, the movie delivered (because that's what I came for fam); my man John B. was too quippy at times, but he worked as the main character. -The pilot suits looked cheap as hell. -Charlie Day almost lost me in the beginning, but at the end I understood his character. -Ivanna Sakhno/Viktoria - holla at me girl, we might have more in common than you think ;) ;) xD (she's 21, I checked, fam, we good). -"We're bringing the fight to them" end scene between John and Charlie was hella lame ("Indepedence Day:Resurgence" much?); I mean, sure, okay, you've beat the shit out of them this time, but as far as the lore goes, these alien fuckers live on a planet, full of pissed off monsters - I don't thinks that's a good idea; I don't think we have the resources. -Oh, oh, I almost forgot - the photoshopped picture of young John, Mako and Idris Elba was unintentionally hilarious xD Overall, a solid 7/10 (for me); I hope there's a third one, BUT if you don't give a f about sci-fi/robots/aliens and if you hate "Transformers" and/or "Independence Day", you're gonna find this dumb. I hope they don't go full "Transformers", if this franchise continues to exist.
