Good description of true suicide clutch and adding comment about rocker clutch, don’t trust it, I always go to neutral. My feelings on aftermarket parts, for the most part I feel they are much, much better than 40 years ago. One thing which bugs me is Harley-Davidson talks of their heritage but without aftermarket parts it would be difficult to keep old ones on the road.

Mike, Its a true pleasure to watch all your videos... You have helped me through four different surgeries and now that I am FINALLY better, its out to the garage to do a restoration on my 1980 HD FXB - Shovel... Putting a rocker foot clutch [3rd bike with one] and keeping it old & worn looking....not interested in keeping it looking orignial, just up & running. I have the engine done, frame has been media blasted and powder coated and I am pretty sure I have every nut & bolt to do the job....plus total re-wire. Everyone needs a project like this in Upstate New York where the snow gets 4-5 feet deep overnight 2-3 times per month..."lake effect off Lake Ontario, NY". I used a shifter pedal with backing plate. I had to modify where the rod threads, but it works fine. You ever hear that story about how "suicide clutch" got its name? Well, I'll tell ya. Dude rolls out with a new girlfriend on the back. Being used to the old one who knew how to sit back there he didn't think to throw it in neutral when he rolled up to the stoplight. He just had his foot on the pedal. Well, girlfriend sees a quarter on the asphalt on the left side of the bike and bends over to pick it up. Of course that unbalances dude and he pulled his boot from the pedal to keep from falling over. And those big ol' flywheels just kept rolling 'round and 'round: chug chug. When the copper was interviewing a witness it went something like this: "They were just sitting there, but it was almost like the guy was waiting for that Mac truck. When it got to the right spot he pulled right out in front of it. It sure looked like he committed suicide to me." ☺

Hi Mike... Greetings from Perth, Western Australia... I just finished hooking up a Suicide Clutch and Police Special Tank Shift on my '85 SoftTail Bobber... I have been riding bikes with Suicide Clutches for 50+ years with no problems at all... great fun once you get accustomed to it... My bikes are a little ''different'' from the norm though, because I have installed my Throttle on the left hand side of the 'Bars so that you have to roll it forward to speed up, the opposite to what is normal... GunShot wound to my right arm caused nerve damage and I have limited use, so ''necessity being the Mother of inention,'' I had to ''adapt'... It is a great set-up once you get used to it, I even did it to my '71 Norton Commando with a Hand Clutch... Great channel by the way, one of the few MotorCycle youtube channels one can trust not to steer you wrong... Keep up the great work mate...

So back in the mid-70's my brother bought a Franken-Harley. It was made up of parts from a 1955 Police Bike and parts from several other models. It had a stick shift from the tranny that came up and on the outside of your leg. It also had a suicide clutch on the left side peddle. It was a Pan Head and smoked like hell. For a 10 year old kid, I knew my way around that Panhead with my eyes closed. For Some reason the oil return to the head was allowing oil into the cylinders. Anyhow, by brother was about 17 years old and I was 10. We finally got the thing running and he was going to take it for a test ride. The primary chain cover was currently off, and he went to adjust the linkage for the suicide clutch and the double chain caught his left hand and pulled it over the sprocket thus removing the tops of his middle and ring fingers. A dumb mistake for a 17 year old youngster. Skin grafting was an emerging medical art and after about a year and 3-4 operations, his fingers thought mangled were still there intact. He even grew back fingernails. So the lesson is don't adjust anything with parts exposed and the engine running. it was a cool bike though, home chopped by someone...It was sold shortly after the incident.

I don't have time yet to go thru all your videos on pan heads but I could not resist when the notification came up for this one . You did a great job on this one. I cringe every time someone uses the term suicide shift and have to explain the correct term is clutch. I relate a story about sitting a light and your foot slips off the clutch and the bike jumps out into traffic and you get hit by the milk truck. The milk truck reference gives me a little street credit as an old man. My last foot clutch on a 1950 Pan I had to reconfigure 3 times till I got it comfortable. I finally went with a longer heal peddle than you're planning on. I'm going to put my 65 rigid chopper back on the road this winter with a deuce front end I picked up a few years ago with a real disk brake ( It's dangerous out there these days) and I have a question for you. I was told 50 years ago that if you are running a heavy load you should run a cooler plug . This bike is a lot lighter than a stock FLH and I had been running a # 3 plug and it worked fine so I bought a pair of #3-4 for the future because # 3's are no longer available and even #3-4's are getting hard to find. What's Is your opinion. I'll probably have a lot of questions for you this winter. Mike from Maryland
@pacificmike95013 жыл бұрын
I've read so much on plugs and believe you're right. But, I've always run Champions in Panheads. J12YC's to be exact. If I were doing serious high performance, I would probably be experimenting around more. I hop up Panheads a little and enjoy the low end torque and gear them high, nothing outragreous. 65's are as good as Panheads got and I love them. A good old timey long duration cam without too much lift, a good bump in compression and they're just magical. Free flowing exhaust, a good hot coil and a big trans sprocket. 74 inches is so smooth. And a stock Linkert will easily fuel it. Oh yah, free flowing air filter too. A little "flow ring" inside the air filter is something you can actually feel.

Hey Mike, I have a 64 pan FLH It came with a new BDL belt drive and rivera clutch . I have new inner and outer primary covers my question is what should i do with the crankcase vent/oiler for the old chain drive ? I assume with the belt ,it needs to stay dry? Thanks, Love watching the videos
@pacificmike95013 жыл бұрын
Yes. I've explained this one in other videos. But, it's a good question. Turn the primary chain oiler off at the oil pump. Tighten the tapered screw all the way down. Be careful to not overtighten it. Now, theoretically oil won't feed into the breather. Now, with the primary covers removed, take out the breather pipe and cut the end so it is straight. Attach a rubber hose to it and run it out the rear of the bike. Run it out between the engine and the inner primary. Point the breather down where it comes out of the motor so oil doesn't build up in it. Run the hose out and attach it to the frame, not aimed at the tire. It will let a little oil out from time to time.
@dgadver3 жыл бұрын
Mike, great video. Exactly where I am on my '46 Knucklehead build. Can you educate us about the drain tubes in the primary? Very confusing to me at least. Thanks, Dave
@pacificmike95013 жыл бұрын
The tube going into the primary is the crankcase breather tube. It huffs its air into the primary. The adjustment screw (small, slotted) on the oil pump meters the amount of oil through that breather on to the primary chain. The tube at the bottom rear of the inner primary cover is where the oil goes after it drips from the chain. That's why it runs out onto the ground. The primary chain has a "total loss" oiling system. Harley did this up to 1964. In 65, they went to a "recirculating" system. That's one of the reasons I run a belt drive on early models. I turn off the oiler at that point and run a hose from the breather, behind the inner primary and out the rear of the bike.

If it has a front brake its not a suicide clutch clutch or shift....its just a foot clutch, hand shift ...
@pacificmike95019 ай бұрын
A stock foot clutch has a spring and friction plate that hold the pedal in the "disengaged" position. When these are either defeated or removed, one must hold the pedal in disengaged position. This is now considered a "suicide" clutch pedal. As it was explained to me by my father approximately 70 years ago. He preferred a suicide pedal.

Do you have a video on setting up a Joe hunt magneto? Have a 65 panhead that's having some issues with the magneto (no start, no spark). Thanks for all the great knowledge! Guys ikecyou are national treasures!
@pacificmike9501 Жыл бұрын
Not working with a mag at the moment. No spark? Either it's not functioning, or it is grounded. Joe Hunt Magnetos is in Rancho Cordova California. They can probably set you straight or rebuild your mag, if necessary.

Out of curiosity I pulled up a set of highway pegs on Drag Specialties . 4 freakin hundred & fifty bucks . Damn near dropped a load in my drawers like Joe Biden meeting with the Pope .

This is a very strange time, but it's where we are and when we are. Teddy Roosevelt said, "Do the best you can, with what you got, where you're at." I'm doin' my best and those of us who remember better times may be delusional, but some of us are trying to still live in those times. Maybe even silly, but I try.

@@pacificmike9501 Ditto . Remember when we cut off railroad spikes , drilled & tapped the ends to mount as highway pegs ?. And the high rollers sent theirs to KY. to get chromed ?.
