With so many packing videos, yours is IRL...(in real life)...So happy to see your nice makeup stash, no need do without when you can make it happen. Maybe a video when you're back about how your selections worked, how you managed your laundry, replacing items, etc...just an idea. Thanks.

My question though is how to wash your clothes while traveling abroad? Hand wash? Finding laundry mat?
@kate.hooker
@kate.hooker 4 жыл бұрын
Most developed countries have laundromats which are low cost, also some hostels offer a laundry service or have washing machines you can use. It does vary from country to country, like in south and Central America they have places called Lavandarias where you drop off your bag of laundry then they return it to you clean pressed and folded! However in Africa it was all pretty much hand washing in buckets.

You could also buy a dry bag, Sea to Summit makes great ones. You just put your clothes in the bag, add soap and water and knead the bag for a few minutes. Then rinse them off and hang them up. Sea to Summit also makes a great, very small, clothesline. You can use the bag to pack shoes, dirty clothes or any other items you want to keep separate from your clothing as these bags are super durable.

Sierra Cook no problem! If you’re based in the US you can order it from the Kathmandu website I believe! Otherwise I would also recommend the lighthaul 38 it’s actually the same capacity in carryon mode it just doesn’t have the expanding features but it’s much lighter because of this. Additionally there’s some great bags by topo designs or peak design

I'm so impressed you got your clothes down to one bag! I am hoping to pack in a 40 or 50L when I do my own big trip, but I'm definitely nervous about packing minimally, so I appreciate the words of encouragement and your example. what shampoo, conditioner and bar soap did you bring? did it ever make your bag sticky? also hope you are safe amidst the Corona Craziness.
@kate.hooker
@kate.hooker 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah it does seem daunting at first but once you realise how much you don’t need it’s such a freeing feeling :) I definitely think you can do a 40L! I use ethique bars, in particular the heali kiwi shampoo and the guardian conditioner, but they have ones for all different hair types. In terms of travelling with them it was definitely a lot of trial and error, I used a small mesh drawstring bag to carry them so that post shower I could hang them and they would dry out, then I’d put them in my toiletry bag. But now I’d recommend getting the square metal tins from lush, or just basic metal tins off amazon, then using rubber bands not only to hold them shut but to put them (4) over the tins when they’re open almost like a net to dry the bars on. Hope this helps :)

Autumn Muse so far I’ve been through security in Auckland airport, London Southend and València airport with no issues! If you watch my pack with me minimalist toiletries you’ll see that the bottom pouch is see through on both sides and says liquids and the other two pouches say non liquids and the liquids pouch is in fact smaller than a quart sized bag! I also carry snap lock bags with me anyway, because some airports can be anal about that stuff, so they’re there just in case. Hope that helps x

do you know, how much you back did weight? there are some backpacks with wheels. they are a little bit heavier. do you think, there was some room to have all that in one of those heavier backpacks with wheels - weightwise I mean? would it be ok to have 0,5 or 1 kg (1 or 2 pounds) more to check in as carry on?
@kate.hooker
@kate.hooker 5 жыл бұрын
This bag is definitely on the heavier side at 2.1kg and averaged around 9-10kgs with all the stuff, which is over some airlines limits. Luckily I have had any problems with this so far but it’s actually made me want to downsize even more if I can! Haha :)
@nursen2106
@nursen2106 5 жыл бұрын
@@kate.hooker actually 2,1 kg is not that bad. depends on the sice. maybe for international (? European) destinations a carry on with only 8 kg (without laptop), 2,1 kg could be a bit heavy. but I think, it is quit ok.I think, mine is about 1,8 kg

@@nursen2106 I know your comment is a year old but Fjällräven makes bags that are very light, the Kånken models are about 0,5 kg. I am going to use that on my trip to Russia :) Lighter bags will definitely give you an opportunity to pack a bit more.

@missburn
@missburn 3 жыл бұрын
@@nursen2106 I'm not sure how many kg they are made to carry, but I know that there is a 5 kg carry-on limit for the 2 russian airlines I will be using for the trip, and the 17 inch laptop Kånken can carry that 5 kg limit. I will be going away for a month and will therefore have to wash clothes quite a bit but it seems to work for that specific trip. If you need to carry a ton of electronics it might not be for you. This backpack is often used for school and outdoorsy adventure by the way, it's not a standard travel backpack like the one in the video. But useful if you need a bag that weighs less! It is known to be sturdy, too.

@@kate.hooker cheers, altho watching it back I have no recollection of watching this in the first place. (Sorry). In hindsight it's pretty good, (compared to a LOT of travel videos). I like your spiel at the end - encouraging ppl to pack minimally. A lot of travel vloggers say that what you pack for 2 weeks you can live on indefinitely. I have a slightly different view to that - I think it really depends on the type of travel you're doing; ie: if your trip is just for leisure purposes then you can pack a lot less variety of clothes but the longer trip the more likely it is that you'll need to include a work component, imo, and you may require clothes that have a business element (or other work related clothes) &/OR you may require equipment that enables you to work (eg. I would NEVER take a laptop with me for a purely leisure trip, unlike a lot of travel videos I see). So for me, a 2 week trip means I'd hardly pack anything (especially as a 2 week trip means I probably wouldn't bother leaving the region - when you live in Oz where the flight lengths to virtually anywhere [other than nearby islands] are so long, you tend to think of a trip as an investment of time, not just $). So I agree with your implication that if YOU can pack minimally for 6 months then even the most dedicated over-packer can pack less for 2 weeks 😏 These ppl who struggle to pack 1 bag for a weekend?? 🤔 My guestimation is that what you pack for a long weekend you can live on for 2 weeks; and what you pack for 6months you can live on indefinitely

It weighed around 9.5kg! Yeah it’s a bit risky but that’s the beauty of carry on only, is that because most airlines these days you can check in online, when you arrive at the airport you don’t have to get your bag weighed and can go straight to security!

You should be packing even the liquid make up together with your other liquids and creams count as liquids too, you can carry medical prescibed items outside the allowance but they can and do ask for proof in most cases so be aware. There's minimal and theres your amount of clothing, you have hardly got anything LOL

Ti Jay you’re right! I do put it in there sometimes! Also I have my prescription label suck on my ointment, I also also carry a doctors note for all my medicine! In terms of minimalism it’s different for everyone, remember it’s not about not having a lot of stuff, it’s about having only what you need, and being intentional with the things you have.

@@kate.hooker what i didn't explain properly is in the vast majority of countries (it is wise to check) liquid and cream medications are allowed over the normal liquid limit they are mostly happy to trust our word for it but you are completely right to carry a doctors note or copy of prescription, it also helps when approaching a doctor in the country you are visiting if and when you need a repeat prescription . I was only kidding when i mentioned the amount you took as i knew it was minimal packing lol, if you are not staying in the same area during travel then you can get away with having even less items of clothing as you can rotate the items and move on rotate and move on etc. I am more conscious of rewearing clothes when i am in the same area for a longer time xxx
