How do you pack your bikepacking bags? I'm curious to hear about your setup!

Tjena Mike ! Another useful video , I've done only one bikepacking tour so far and I used a Rockbros frame bag from Aliexpress and a Hapo-G handlebar bag , the ortlieb set is too much for my pocket :) In my frame bag I put some spare parts like zip ties, spare tub and so on. In my handlebar I put some extra cloths and some food. It was only one day because it was in the winter so I didn't need a sleeping bag or my tent but for sore another bag for these things it's enough . Take care and happy cycling , so looking forward to the next video, Vi ses !

Also I forgot to mention about my 2 stem bags , I use one for my camera , is really easy to take your camera while you are cycling and one for a water bottle and a Rockbros top tube bag where I put my phone and my wallet , it's really easy to access your phone also is waterproof and you can use your phone while it's inside of the bag

One thing i don't see too often: i keep my air mattress inside my tent before rolling it up, so it goes in as one package

Revelate Designs makes two seat packs that do not swing back and forth. OTTO Designs Otto lock makes a lock that wraps around a seat pack on the exterior, very light, takes no space. King Cage Titanium bottle holder under the downtube with Voile Straps holds 1.5L Nalgene bottle. Ortleb's sales pitch is "waterproof", but we all know that Ortleibs develop leaks quickly, and then hold dampness inside the bags. Sea to Summit waterproof stuff sacks, or a plastic trash bag work better (apologies to folks that love Ortlieb), but Arkel bags for touring, and Revelate Designs or Oveja Negra for bikepacking are better quality. Happy trails!

thanks Mike, I'm going to get some of those fork mounts, great stuff
@Mike-vd2qt
@Mike-vd2qt 2 жыл бұрын
Re fork mounts, weight up front low on the forks buries the front end on soft terrain, and makes it hard to pop the front wheel over rocks, sticks, and ruts. Ditch the cable lock and tripod, put a water bladder in the frame bag, and two water bottles in Feed Bags at the handlebars. Happy Trails!

Great video, with the centre frame bag in strong side winds does this make the bike unstable? Many thanks.
@BikeTouringMike
@BikeTouringMike 2 жыл бұрын
No, I haven't experienced that. The bike is really stable to begin with so it's going to take quite heavy winds to affect it. I haven't trid my frame bag on my road bike. I would suspect it could make it a bit unstable since the bike only weighs about 8 kg.

Is your saddleback the 14 or the 16.5 liters? I am bidding on the 16.5liter on ebay. But I am afraid of sway

Great info Mike - what is the brand of you little packable backpack?
@BikeTouringMike
@BikeTouringMike 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's called Quechua Arpenaz 20L. It's from Decathlon. I'm not sure that they still sell this backpack, but they have other foldable backpacks. And I used to have one from Sea To Summit that worked great as well (until I lost it). What I'm trying to say is that there are several models out there that does the job.

Hi Mike! How do you take water with you, if the framebag takes the whole triangle? How much water do you usually carry?

Good question! Sorry, I forgot to add that B-roll. I have two stem/feed bags that holds one 750 ml bottle each. So typically I carry about 1,5 litres. I carry a water filter with me and rivers a a plenty here in Sweden, so it's never more than a few kms between a new place to fill up your bottles.
@Mike-vd2qt
@Mike-vd2qt 2 жыл бұрын
Use a King Cage Titanium bottle holder with Voile Straps underneath the down tube, it will hold 1.5L. Plus, two bottles in Feedbags on the handlebars. That will allow you to carry 3L. If you need more water a Camelbak reservoir or a bladder in the Frame Bag works best. The lock he showed is too big, and heavy; the OTTOLOCK Otto Designs wraps around the seat bag and saves space/weight.. Revelate Designs makes a seat bag that does not swing, the Ortleib bags are rare to see in the U.S. for bikepacking. Happy Trails!

Hi! I'll be coming to Tromso in August. What regions could you recommend me for hiking, riding, kayaking? I saw that Senja is not too far away. There seem to be so many fjords and hills to choose from. Thanks :D

Why not Surly brand bike? Surly MTB have rear and front rack mounts. And you ad fenders too.

Great information Mike. I have a question. I have an older, steel framed bike, with older curved front fork. I would think that putting fork mounted racks, including even pannier racks would negatively affect the "natural" damping effect of these forks and effectively harshen the ride characteristics of the entire system. What do you think?

A similar video on how to pack your bike touring bags coming up anytime soon?
@BikeTouringMike
@BikeTouringMike 2 жыл бұрын
Hopefully. But general idea is pretty much the same. Distribute the weight equally over the 4 (or 2 panniers). Put your valuables in one bag that you can bring into the supermarket. And leave some space for food!

@@BikeTouringMike thank for sharing your experience! On a side note, in one of your other videos, you mentioned that you cook your closing meal of the day at a separate spot in the wild before cycling for some thirty more minutes. I found it interesting because I had thought about doing the exact same thing. So, my question is, when doing so, do you still hang your food pannier in the tree once you arrive at your final camp spot? Or do you put it in your tent along with other belongings? Does the food scent go away after thirty minutes of cooking?
