In this video, we explore how you can use the open source HashiCorp Vagrant CLI tool to create custom Linux images for Hyper-V! We'll install a vanilla Ubuntu Studio 22.04 LTS operating system, then customize it by installing a few software packages and altering configuration files. After customization, we'll package up the operating system as a Vagrant "box" archive, test it out locally, and finally upload it to Vagrant Cloud. Vagrant Cloud allows you to share your custom Vagrant boxes with the global developer community!
Vagrant is a cross-platform, open source CLI tool that helps you to provision and manage virtual machine (VM) development environments. You can also use Vagrant to create custom operating system images and rapidly deploy pre-configured VM images, reducing the time it takes to get systems up and running.

Hi Trevor, Thanks for this video, it really helpful. after creating the .box file, when you add the Box using vagrant add. you specify the provider as hyper-v Cant this box run on the Virtual Box as well? Using the vagrantfile?

Thanks for your kind comment! Yes, I believe you can use VirtualBox. VirtualBox doesn't play nicely with Hyper-V, so I can't use it on this system. God bless you!

Hi Trevor, thanks for the reply back. I had done some experiment and had the below observations I tried to use this box image created for hyper-v and boot it up using Vagrantfile with Virtual Box as provider but it threw error. So apparently we can’t box an hyperV image without converting the .vhdx file to .vdi.
