Ahhhh... such a revenge on that STK*** such a pain "one" place, I was spending late night hours opening them up and soldering on top new output transistors, since new STK is just beyond $$$ for what it is. The only good part in such things is the volume control combo with motor, mostly it was Alps made. And as a tip for those who like STK IC's, keep in mind they are only for 6 Ohm + speakers, 4 Ohms = STK go boom. You can run it on 4 ohms, but then you need lower the voltage and amps for it.

Nice touch with the EOL part. I find the high power claim on that cheap POS comical - that PB would blow that cheap stereo out of the water in terms of power and overall audio quality.

I'd choose the PB over any cheap micro system like that one

Good stress relief, that golf club v. plastic stereom is about all that it was good for. Surprising to see that it had a transformer instead of a SMPS.

Same here. Not only do the thrift stores and estate sale prices start at $200 and go from there, but they never work.I have a few tube consoles I lucked out on a few years ago,but they are all dead, and there is nobody here in Albuquerque to repair or restore them. The record changer in there is a Glaser-Steers.I have a component version, sold by Heathkit. It's not working right, and they are notoriously hard to work on.

I'm surprised you don't want to fix the changer. That changer is a Glasser Steers (looks to be a GS77) which is arguably the best American-made changer. They stop the platter fully each time before they drop a record then restart it after the pickup has landed on the lead-in of the next record. Gentle enough that I trust my GS77 on even my best records. Maybe records aren't the best when painting a house*, but I'd make a unit like that a main living room stereo any day....Heck, I wish my Packard Bell Roundy color combo had a GS77 instead of the Garrard AT6 it came with. *The average 12" 3RPM LP is ~15min per side and a GS77 can hold around 15 LPs so every ~3.75 Hours you'd have to turn the stack over or swap the stack...Taking a 5-15 min break every 3-4 hours to wash the paint off your hands and swap a stack of LPs doesn't sound that bad to me...Heck, I painted one of the bathrooms at my house with all 5 of The Police's albums on one of my changers blasting from a room down the hall. That 'this asbestos needs a high-speed grinder and a cocaine straw' is IMO the most quotable joke I've seen in your videos so far.

The changer in this combo is a very interesting one. It is manufactured by Philco, and has an independent mechanism to drive the changer separately from the turntable. During the change cycle, the turntable pauses as the record drops.

LOL When you ask "Do you think that's open or do you think that disc cap is shorted"?, My bet the question is flying right over the heads of the "replace all the caps., that'll fix it" crowd. And the comment about the asbestos pad was hilarious. You're sense of humor is priceless Shango. Better entertainment than the vast wasteland of what passes for television these days. I hope you never tire of posting video's.

I remember distinctly seeing Van Halen's 1984 album tour, it was good but they were better in '81. With you being in the LA area I'm sure people were familiar with them from their club days. I worked with a guy who was raised in LA and was some sort of early VH groupie, his dad was a B sci-fi movie star in the 60's. Oh I'm rambling.

That Packard Bell is killer! Nice EOL of that late 90's era Aiwa BPC shelf thing. I think it's still a little early to call CD's a "dead format". They've fallen out of preference as a medium but they're still a completely viable physical format.

Packard Bell operated a non-union plant in the L.A. area, and since virtually all of its competitors were back East, were unionized, and had to ship to California, P-B had quite a cost advantage and therefore their units sold for somewhat lower prices than the other brands did. Also, P-B really liked to simplify all of their circuits as much as possible in order to keep costs down. The performance was just OK. I don't think their sets used retrace suppression.

Hold on to that record changer! It's a Glaser-Steers GS-77 T, The "T" version had an 11" platter, don't see many of those. There's also a rabid following for those changers- you may wanna get that running and hawk it on eBay!

If that Van Halen is a first issue pressed in Germany,I think,it may have some collector value. They are called "target CDs".because of the colored centers. The early CDs,from the 80s,before the loudness wars kicked in,are hot collectibles now.

30.08 "Replace the electrolytics! It will work again." Wasn't there a class action lawsuit on those units? I think it was a power amplifier issue. Failure prone. I can't remember if there was an associated safety concern such as fire. God Bless

not all new stuff is bad now. i have aiwa nsxaj80 which was made by sony at that point i think and it can get loud. 250 watts. has 2 connections each speaker 1 for low and one for mid and high. panorama satellite speakers and can hook up a sub and surround speakers if want too. computer hooked to it and stuff. more power then i would ever need where i live. reviews.cnet.com/audio-shelf-systems/aiwa-nsx-aj80-mini/4507-6721_7-30099671.html
