Hi Brenda, thank you so much for the videos, they are so helpful! I have a couple questions, so hopefully you’ll see this. 1. Can we bring our things in any type of bag? Like would a duffle for clean supplies and a reusable shopping bag for trash be okay? 2. During the chemical section (i.e. foiling, color, and relaxer), can we pack everything in one bag and take it all out at the same time? I just moved to NY from SC and my exam back home was very different. Thank you!

Thanks for your kind words - I'm glad they are helpful! You need to wear an outer garment, such as a smock or an apron (just make sure you don't have sleeveless shirt on if you wear an apron). The shoes need to be closed-toe & heel, not made of a material that is easily pierced (like canvas). I hope this helps!

I was looking for a refresher courses or state-board courses (my old school use to offer those, but they closed down in 2018) so these videos bring back such memories. We packed bags for state-board and would do state-board Monday’s in which we would go through a mock state board for class. At that time I would never find anything online to help me review what I could b doing wrong. So these videos are perfect 👌🏼 🤩 😍 👏🏼 👏🏼

Would I be able to use a tint bowl during the test for the cholesterol for the relaxer ? I wasn't taught to put the gel on the back of my hand. I just used the brush to dip in the container?

I wouldn't recommend that - because if you have it covered with some type of foil/saran wrap, it might leak in your kit. I would recommend some type of plastic container, which you have labeled appropriately.

I'm in Michigan and unfortunately for cosmetology you have to do 1500 clock hours and I've been trying to ask the board and different lawmakers in Michigan to lower the hours down and I use New York as a reference point like Texas. Can you tell me if there is a difference in the learning 500 extra hours versus just an even thousand clock hours. I would really like to know.

Hi, and thanks so much for the compliment! As an educator in NYS, I wish we actually required more hours. It is very difficult to teach all of the content within 1000 hours. NYS has the least amount of hours in our country. I think the biggest difference is that schools in other states can elaborate on content, offer more clinical hours and better prepare students for the state licensing exams - all of these are great things in helping to prepare future cosmetologists!

Yes! Start with a clean container/bag with everything in it, leave with a dirty container/bag filled. Make sure to label both!

Any colored gel will work. You can buy it at Walmart or any drug store. I even had a student once but clear gel and add food coloring to it so it was colored!!

Do I need a certain stand for the state board? I got a table stand in my cosmetology kit I don't if they would be okay..? Or do I need the stand that you have in your video "NYS Cosmetology Practical Licensing Exam Set up"?

That's a great question. The school I work at has the stands set up on their chairs. We leave them for the examinees. I suggest buying the pro-holder attachment, in case one isn't provided. You could always call the location you are scheduled to examine at and ask them what examinees typically use there.

You don't need it - one less thing to pack! 1st aid kit can be included in the blood contamination kit, or it can be separate.

No. And it doesn't need to be a suitcase. It can be a large bag, a tote, anything that can be closed and labeled.

When you begin, you need to have a barrier between the cape & towel (neck strip, towel, etc.). Once you begin the chemical portion (perm), you need to change your draping to towel, cape, towel. Then that draping can stay for the remainder of the test.

Your temporary license is good for 6 months, but you can extend it 1x for an additional 6 months (for a fee) - you should be able to get your practical examination done by then.
