Never did learn to roll a canoe, but this video brought back some fond memories from when I was younger and paddled a whitewater canoe. My good friend that taught me always said "If you're not swimming, you're not learning." I swam many rivers. Those were memorable times.

When I learned to roll in the begining...I would fall into a low brace position ( Then your allready in the setup position) at the halfway point of the roll....you gotta keep your head down and forward (allmost hit your nose on the canoe gunnel while twisting your hips) you were lifting your head early...and arching backward will never work!!! HALF THE BLADE TWICE THE MAN!!!! :D love the canoe challenges.

You're a real champion Ken, my admiration for you only gets bigger. I enjoyed the video very much. (although four interruptions for commercials is a bit too much)

Hi Ken, a very interesting Video! I Like your YT Channel very much, it is very interesting and amazing to look for me because I'm a "slow-water-kayaker" from the north of Germany. We nearly only have got slow floating rivers here and I like to paddle this kind of rivers. But I like your videos of your rivers very much! Thank you for your work making these films! Greetings from Germany! Thomas

I loved it. I will work hard to get this in my schedule for next spring/summer. I just returned from Nantahala, North Carolina, rode my "new" Mohawk 14' 8 miles down through the Lesser Wesser; aka Nantahala Falls, with (lols) a great deal of success. I swam three times early up at Patton's Run and some other gnarly, fun, haystacks & ledges. 4th time in that craft, by midway down, learned some major issues, (lol) one I gotta get some loose hips and core stamina. However, towards the last 3-4 miles, I stayed up right, eddied out successfully "most" of the time, worked on ferrying; (btw it was running 1,000 cfs which is pretty good pace for there. Anyway, I ran the Lesser Wesser successfully and with "confidence". I love what I see, am from Ohio by birth and have a strong likelihood that my next assignment is going to be up north of Toronto, so I am stoked to find ya'll and improve my open canoe skills before I learn too many bad habits. Great video.

I don't usually comment much, but I wanted to say that these videos are top notch and that it's a crime that you don't have more views!

I tried it, but I used a kayak paddle. They said I was crazy and I was doing it wrong - well, yeah, but I had more fun with 2 blades.

Wow that's a different kind of canoe! And I thought my Clipper prospector was a whitewater canoe. I've never even seen one like that before. Is there a reason that single blade is preferred? Is it because you're kneeling? I got really into using a double blade for canoe touring actually now I'm in love with the double.

A canoe roll: A futile exercise recommended when guys can't take a swim any other way due to being experienced paddlers in order to make beginners feel better :D

Ha! Did you see the follow up video, where I actually got it! That was one of my more proud paddling moments in the past decade... although I don't know if I'll ever use it in a real situation. I like staying upright. :)

@@PaddleTV Yes, bravo! It was very impressive. But watching the second part only confirmed my definition 😆.

Great stuff. How do you get back to the Kanu centre at the end of your paddle? Do you paddle back up stream?

You need to set up a shuttle - leaving a vehicle at the takeout.

If only the courses were affordable. Id love to get into white water but I cannot afford these lessons.

Would it kill the manufacturer if he made the boats more stable? These canoes look almost like a bath tub for children, and those are not designed for rowing or paddling. No wonder most people prefer a kayak in such waters! Having an instructor close to you all the time can be both distressing and annoying. That is, even when the instructor is as nice and easygoing as this one. The river is great, though; in the end, there are only the two of you there and everything else, gone! An experience is taking shape which will quite likely never be forgotten.
