I can’t wait till I get my own sea kayak! Paddling since the age of 8 I’m very familiar & comfortable on the water, & looking forward to learning what the sea kayak can teach me! Still debating which boat is right for me, so going to do some renting first.

I wouldn't worry about it. I started kayaking 2 months ago. On rivers and creeks. SUP doesn't interest me but I am not knocking it. I really crave sea kayaking but where I am located I can only hit the lakes and large rivers.

The two problems with SUP are that you have a one ended paddle and you’re not sitting down.

Agreed!! Superior is quite cold, but as long as you're dressed properly it's not too much of an issue!

I am new to kayaking so new that I have never been in one. I live on Lake Superior and I so badly want to get out there and kayak. I started driving for Uber just to get the money faster to get my own kayak. Guess would be now where can I learn to kayak? Do you give lessons?

This made me drool. I spent most of my teenage years near Marquette, MI, however, I married my college sweetheart in 83', who's from Bluefield, WV, (less than a mile from the VA border). I haven't been back since 83', but still dream of the majestic land I left. I started kayaking in 2014, doing a large part of my paddling on lakes and rivers in WV, VA, NC, SC, TN, and GA, usually within three hours from Bluefield. In fact, I'm less than 30 miles from The New River, VA; you recently traversed this river with the River Kings on the TN portion. I've been trying to convince my wife to retire to the U.P., however, we have a nice home here and several acres of land overlooking a nearby lake, plus she's stuck in her ways. I plan on traveling to Marquette next year with my new Stellar S18 EXP G2 and/or my Tahe Marine (now Zegul) Wind 555. You're blessed to live in such a beautiful part of the world. Thanks for giving me another look at a place that is very dear to my heart.

I've gone out to the point of the old woman bay cliffs in an aspire 10.5 Fine going out but when I got back near the beach the weather changed and I was been pushed by 5 foot waves lucky in the right direction. It was blend of fun and anxiety. I need a sea kayak haha.

If i had Google maps, i would have found the perfect water (river in my case) to live nearby and paddle on daily. Then chosen a career. NOT THE OTHER WAY ROUND ! A BIG MISTAKE I MADE !

I got a question.. can a person paddle anywhere on lake superior? Or do you gotta try and watch out so you don't accidentally cross the border? Or can you paddle anywhere just as long as you don't touch the soil of the other country?

Hmmm interesting question! I've lived here my whole life (Sault Ste.Marie Ontario to Wawa area) and well...the international boundary does cross half in the water however they have whats called "Vessel Reporting System" where you can use your phone app and report to where you'll likely be arriving then the usual passport, nexus card, ID etc...Obviously if you didn't land then yea pretty much if you turn back then you technically didn't...errr LAND.

i need to make videos of the waves i get into in colorado and wyoming . total madness when winds sucked in behind me from a tornado cell pushed me across the lake at 20 mph . i added a 9in paddle board fin to my kayak after that .

To be honest... I don't remember what model it was! It's been a few years since I've paddled it, and I've paddled so many different boats since. If I remember, I'll let you know.

It seems to me that instead of risking getting pushed up on the rocks, why not paddle a little further from the break and rebounding waves? All the white water, surf kayaking, and rock garden extremes might be putting the wrong image out there about how kayaking really is like. There are lots of choices and those videos which seem to pervade the internet may have quelled the interest for possible new kayakers, but that is all we seem to see in almost every video. We used to have a local kayak shop that was really great in Anacortes, WA, but it is gone now, and it seems the pressure to make new kayakers see all the very harsh conditions has pulled many back from those risks, and the extensive training required to do that kind of kayaking. I have kayaked for many years and have a lifetime history of island travel in small boats, sail racing including ocean crossings in my sailboat, so I know what it’s like and there are so many choices for less treacherous paddling. 😎
