I've wanted to see this interview for a while, but that was one of the most genuine insights into coaching, passion for a sport and passion for sharing that sport's skillset with others. I had no idea what Rimmers background was before now. What a filmic story from a kid who liked a niche sport to someone who spent decades obsessing and becoming a top coach and mentor. You love to see success find people who work hard and inspire success in others. Loved that.

This is slowly becoming my favourite podcast! I had the pleasure to train in next gen back in 2017 while when I was living in Liverpool and you can tell from Rimmers incredible start and living in the gym in the USA, he’s brought an incredible atmosphere to his gym, very welcoming. Coming from kickboxing I was just get smoked every grappling session and I’ll always remember in frustration saying can’t I roll with someone who’s not a blue belt and I looked up and on his knees just to get side of me Rimmer said if you don’t struggle and challenge yourself you’ll never improve. That’s stuck with me! Most underrated coach in the world!

paul makes a great point about technical skills. i remember the first time i saw royce gracie i was always disappointed that he won through submission and i thought it was boring. i really didn't understand it until i met someone who knew a little jiujitsu and he made a believer out of me and ever since i pay attention to a persons ground and grappling skills in a match. i've taken some jiujitsu classes myself and it's loads of fun and great exercise.

The Bernie guy he mentions at 08:00 is Bernie Gavan. He started the first MMA gym in Merseyside (Hoylake) around 1998-9. I used to go down there and train with Paul and his friend Mike. There was only ever about 3 or 4 people training at once, because nobody knew about it! I remember the advert too, "Brazilian Style Grappling" it said lol. Because Bernie wasn't actually BJJ trained ( there was no-one to learn from at the time). He basically just applied his judo ne-waza (groundwork) and also combined it with muay this style striking. Great days. Glad to see you doing well Paul.
