I grew up listening to Indian music, watching Indian films and learning about the Indian culture in general, from the beliefs and traditions to the food. I was 8 years old when it started and now I'm 22. I stopped for like 4 years, but then I came across this masterpiece on TV by coincidence and I was reminded again why I fell in love with India and its culture in the first place. So, here’s the question; How does one describe… this absolutely dazzling rendering of a historical fantasy with a thousand glittering frames layered in one sensuous layer upon another…in one word? Magnum Opus would be two words. Two___ too many and still inadequate. The immaculate conception of this centuries old dance, perhaps seen in a dream, and its perfect reproduction on celluloid…its beyond perfect setting in grandest of Rajasthan architecture (set design?) honed and shone (d) in dreamesque firelights, magnificent costumes and props, make these ancient characters come alive for us after hundreds of years. That bells-in-the-temple rhythm of (probably) some old, folk ballad upon which the song has been designed, its devotional tenor and lilt, the slow, ancient rhythm of the dance…this moody, mysterious, dance reminiscing some sacred rituals of worship, building to this exhilarating crescendo. How can one describe all of this poetry of setting, words, images, music, apparel and glitter in one word? Bhansali. Or if you wish to quote the full name, Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
