Padre Soler wrote this piece to be entertaining. It emulates, using a harpsichord, the sound of a flamenco guitar with fast finger work duplicating the strumming of the guitar strings. The piece is not cast in stone but is a framework for improvisation. What the harpsichordist does with it is the product of his skill and creativity. Jean Rondeau is blessed with both.

Absolutely astonishing performance. As I listen to this piece, I hear a composer, who was also a priest, lost in ecstatic spiritual ecstasy. The quality of the composition is improvisational. It doesn't follow conventional form. It flows endlessly like a grand waterfall - always changing form, shape and texture - yet it all makes organic sense. This could ONLY be music that was composed under the influence of a man spiraled up into a vortex of spiritual bliss and ecstasy.

Why People can't seem to grasp that this piece is played in the idiom of baroque indulgence, excess, improvisation, sexuality,... and passion, do we think the caricature of the era must be forced on the reality? Excellent performance. My favorite performance of Fandango, by Soler nwas a concert , broadcast by WNYC in the early 1980's. I have looked for it in vain: Elizabeth Churchnacko, (spelling????), in which the left hand figure, pulsed like rapids in a river , lyrically, and undulating, in a very lively, and wonderful way , the likes of which, I have never heard again...!!!! But this one is very spectacular, and imaginative, and firey.! ! !

Then I talked with a friend of mine who is both a pianist and a musicologist and he told me he found this rendition absolutely fascinating, and marvellous, very living. I said "they didn't play that serious way we imagine", that means "they didn't play it in a boring way",( many people imagine ancient music) or "without any fantasy" ( people believing they only play the notes that are written".
