You're right- he was Sandhu born into Sikh family (like myself) but an atheist (again like myself). Other than being Sikhs, Jatts can be Hindus or Muslims, or can be atheists/irreligious but still be patriotic & proud of our origins & identity. You are mixing religion with cultural identity. Traditionally Pagri or Pagg was a symbol of dignity in most of North India irrespective of religion. That is the message of the song- honour your self-respect & dignity & don't bow down to imperialists.

If Bhagat Singh would have lived then we would have got our Independence sooner and if he would have been the Prime Minister then India would have never seen partition as he was uniting India. Under his leadership people would have never even thought of fighting in the name of religion. India would have been a better country.
