I first saw Naseeruddin Shah in films like Aakrosh, Junoon etc. There was a strange fire in his eyes. I rate his portrayal of Mirza Ghalib as a landmark. He still remains the best of the parallel or realistic cinema. All the others who came after him have been trying to touch the high bar placed by him.

And Naseeruddin Shah: His 'Sparsh' changed my perspective of life, and the very thought of some memorable scenes --- the early morning walk with 'Khaali Pyaala Dhundlaa Dharpan' song played by the versatile Shabana Azmi, and the one in a beautiful aesthetic garden among others --- of the legendary movie still send shivers down my spine. I want to live in that early '80s "parallel" era... Oh the wheel of time, roll back. (Daud Peechhe Ki Taraf Ae Gardish-e-Ayyaam Tu). Moreover, who can forget Mirza Naseeruddin Shah Ghalib? I am indebted to the great Gulzar Sahab for showing us the great Mirza Ghalib through the great Naseer Sahab (as he is fondly called). Hail the Art Cinema!
