I love how Johan's vocal presence was more significant on the RS albums. He's got a really good voice as well.

Pain of Salvation's Road Salt is high art, reaches deep into the soul if you let it, because it is born of pain, the hero's journey of the soul; this music could not be created by people who had not lived this truth and come through the other side of it; it is truly authentic. Can reach past your emotional defenses if you let it; it is transformative and illuminating. Can't believe some people hear it and worry about what 'category it fits into!

This sort of epiphanic revelations involving PoS lyrics often happen to me as well. I listen to a song for several years striving to understand what the lyrics mean then, suddenly, something happens in my life and it all turn to crystal clear. I feel as if I am crossing the very same situation Daniel was crossing when he happened to write those words. It is poetry at it's boundary: Allegories so deep you can only get them if you are in the situation. Even the meaning of the name "Pain of Salvation" came to me in the same fashion. Daniel is among my favorite writers for this reason. He is a master of deep allegories.

She keeps the world at bay With walls built to stand come-what-may And with that coldness on display, they held until today She would hold her own Running all alone Ridding her road of every grain To stay in control But now. She cries. Alive Suddenly she is down on all four And the walls will support her no more Cries her eyes out like never before Onto this linoleum The bottled up and stored She's won every war And when she's out that door She will push ahead of you, frowning at the poor She would move so fast not to end up last Aiming for the finish line To smile at those she'd passed But now. She cries. Alive Suddenly she is down on all four And the walls will support her no more Cries her eyes out like never before Onto this linoleum The bottled up. And stored -- And sometimes Oh, just sometimes That's really all it takes: A hand on her shoulder Then she breaks Sometimes that's really all it takes: (Yes then) A word of kindness and she breaks (She breaks) And then the sum of damage done (Well she breaks) Spills out on stale linoleum (She breaks) Sometimes that's really all it takes: (She breaks) A gentle touch and then she breaks (She breaks) To see the sum of damage done (She breaks) Stain this linoleum (Oh, she breaks) Sometimes that's really all it takes: (Oh, she breaks) A word or touch and then we break (Oh, she breaks) And all this world's linoleum (She breaks) Can't hold the sum of damage done -- (She's becoming her last casualty) Itsy bitsy Spider Climbed the water spout (If she breaks then at last she'll be free) Down Came the Rain And washed the spider out (But she keeps it together once more) Now she stays on the ground So she'll never fall (And runs another day to fight another war) See she would rather drown Than lose control

This is incredible music, you lose hope in this time related to music where you feel it is lived and loved, and with the tears and the frustrating in itself. So deep you feel on the ground, you feel the reality here you can feel the frustration and the Significance of this music.

wow, I see too much coments saying "this isn't metal" or "this isn't prog" or "this isn't prog metal blah blah blah" ... Then, if music is not prog metal or whatever, is it bad? btw, Daniel Gildenlöw has said so many times that they don't play progressive metal. Odd time signatures in many songs don't mean that a band is progressive. Distorted guitars don't have to be metal. Don't care about if it is prog metal or not. Just enjoy this awesome band and their ability to reinvent themselves.

I have a feeling the same people that complain about the new sound not being as "good" as the first 4 albums are the same kind of people that get tired of their husband/wife after a few years. People change, and you have to accept that. Usually, it's for the better. Either way, it's an expression of who they are, and I think I owe it to them to find something to enjoy about it, since they obviously put a lot of time and effort, and poured their blood into this (literally).

i posted on an Opeth vid and the responder suggested i might dig these guys. the subject was the sublte(or not so sublte) classical influence in the better metal out these days. never cared much for comparisons myself either. apples to oranges and such. curry or vindaloo..take your pick,it's all delicious if the attention is given to the ingredients!

Pain of Salvation is known to explore all kinds of music, from jazzy to metal, from funky to classical. And it all depending on what they are talking about. They have already talked about war, society, and policitcal, personal and philosophical issues. Now their theme seems to require this so-called "70 on steroids". But some people aren't too keen on how it sounds like. The ones who like it won't stop reminding the first ones of the fact the guys are always changing their sound. Short story.

Prog is a unique "genre" in that there are many bands that can be considered "Prog" yet each have their own unique style. Queensryche, Fates Warning, Dream Theater, PoS, Vanden Plas, Opeth, and more. The common bond that makes them Prog? Evolution, experimentation, and musicianship. They write solid songs outside of the confines of genre and have developed their own unique sound. Really, each band are their own genre. That's why neither can be compared. They ARE all prog, but they're also diff.

I am a fan of metal music and first was interested in this band because I heard that they were a "progressive metal" band. I soon found out that they are only partially a metal band, and mostly a prog rock band. I am proud of saying that I enjoy their music regardless of their genre to this day. This vid has some strange visuals, but this song really sticks with me.
