That was Philly mentality. During that time, as ruthless and petty as it is, disrespect of any kind was brutal and their was a consequence for crossing that boundary. Young boys and girls had to prove they weren’t wimpy enough to let someone clown them and get away with it. Attacking Will was his way of earning respect. there were far more dangerous acts of violence going on in that high school and around that city. These were rough times. 😥

I agree, the guy really shouldn’t have said anything to Will, and when Will dissed him he could have just ignored it, and if his friends are gonna dog him over it he would be better off making new friends, and even when he had the thought to go and get the lock he could have dismissed the idea, or changed his mind at the time when he saw Will but he didn’t and it cost him, good for Will for owning his portion of the issue but seems to me he is also taking on more than his part... I think that is why Will is a great guy, he will take on more than what is his fault which allows him to occupy greater spaces of power than a person who won’t even take responsibility for things that are their fault... 🙏🏽💒🙏🏽 Hope and pray the young mans life eventually turned around...

Mike S I think indirectly he was a victim of circumstance. And he was putting his shit onto Will Smith. Will could have looked at the dude as some awful bully and felt it was all that dude's fault but Will didn't do that. Will recognized where he contributed to an escalating situation while simultaneously acknowledging this other kid's humanity. I believe it allowed Will to ultimately become a bigger person and hence why he is the person we love today.

I have heard of people wanting to knock some sense into someone, but it takes someone painfully self-aware to be able to take a beating like that and consider their own part in it. No, it was not Will's fault and he did not deserve that kind of response to a single instance of shit talk. However, his ability to think deeply about it at such a young age and find a way to better himself is highly admirable. So many others get hit by a fist (or life in general) and only want to hit back or take a more cynical outlook on life. Will gets hit and, rather than feel weak, realized his own strength and set out on a mission to make others strong as well. This is why we love him.

your perspective speaks volumes to me. at first i thought "but that wasn't your fault self control is something every parent needs to teach their child" but then it hit me. cause and effect. because of your fear (cause) you made an outburst (effect) and because of your outburst (cause) he made one. which led to another one, ending in an violent action (effect) meaning there was no self control in either of you. bringing you to the decision of being positive in all you say. it means a lot to me because i was bullied and a bully. now I'm a 37yrold woman and my life isn't the best i became a statistic do to my own actions. i am trying to do better for myself and my children but i never understood "why me." i now realize that the why doesn't matter. what mattered was "why did i." now i will let go of that past and move forward with my life. I'm not the one in story but because of your openness about it i am the one you helped as always thank you for your inspiration. i will continue to work to get my family out of the situation i created but this time i will be more determined and happy

Will, it’s good that you spoke to the person that assaulted you back then. However, that guilt that you’ve carried, is not your burden to bear. That “gentleman” made the decision to attack you based on simple words. He could have easily killed you. One of the things that I’m trying to teach my daughters is that you don’t give other people the power to affect your emotions based on words.

I agree. There was malicious intent and planning involved in unlocking a lock and then using it as a weapon. In fact, I imagine that if Will hadn't said anything he probably still would have gotten beat, as this kid in the story was essentially projecting his authority. Anything short of subservience is challenging his authority and grounds for punishment.

@F.K. How is it irrational to want to inspire, enlighten or help others? You sound like a sad individual, who would rather waist his time to energy making excuses to hate the world and others around him, than to improve his own life and help others to improve themselves. I was that guy at one point in my life, but I changed. Adults are meant to grow as people, learn from mistakes and improve themselves. If they cannot, then they are truly a waist of life. I am not saying that you should be superman, you cannot control what you cannot see or hear. Things you cannot physically touch. But you can open your mind to the possibility of helping yourself and helping others around you have a better life. I made those steps, you can to. I really hope you do... Have a nice day buddy!

The larger story isn't about whose fault it was. The larger story was about recognizing our power to affect change in people's lives--for good or evil. It is about taking responsibility for that power. Let's face it, he could have made the whole story about the other kid's poor choice. He didn't. He took ownership of his own choices and the effect they have on others. I'm glad he makes videos like this. These are things we can all stand to be reminded of.

Big Will, This story resonated with me on so many levels. Number one, in middle school, I too was one of the few sprinkles of pepper amongst the salt, and I too got popped in my temple with someone holding an object in their hand, AND the dispute was sparked by my arrogance concerning a female. It was also in middle school where I made fun of someone and my words began to echo throughout the school, causing a great deal of embarrassment for them. But what really struck me about your story, is not only did I too have that moment of self realization where I was made aware of how powerful my words and actions are, but I too, turned to God in Repentance and made a promise to God to use my power for good and to Uplift and Inspire. Fortunately, years later (thanks to Facebook) I was able to find this person and make amends. I pray that whomever you are referencing in this video received your sentiment of seeking forgiveness and I pray for continued success for You, Jada, Trey, Jaden, and Willow. Keep Shinin Big Homie, and Much Love To You. Thank you for being one of the Good Ones. 🙏🏿👊🏿💙💯👑

Thanks for sharing. Our actions can have far reaching consequences. As a 1st grader I was brutally bullied because I started school 2 weeks late and everyone had already started their little cliques. I carried the scars of what happened to me (the bullying was physical and on a daily basis) until I had kids of my own and realized that these people that had caused so much trauma to me were babies and probably dont even remember what they had done. It lead me to the realization that every interaction involving at least two people also has two people that need to process it. Both sides share blame for what happens afterwards. That kid either learned from what he did and changed (positively or negatively) or continued on the path he was already on, which clearly wasn't a good one because his response was disproportionate to what you had done/said. What we do know is that what happened had a profound affect on you and lead you to change, thus helping others. These defining moments, whether negative or positive can inspire us to change. It is the person that we are deep down that determines whether that change will be positive or negative. In my case, it had a profound impact on who I became. Recognizing all of the above allowed me to work through the trauma I still felt, but even though it was a horrifically negative experience, the person I was learned from it and grew.

Yeah hence why I said 'good message' I think Will learnt a good lesson about life but he shouldn't hold himself responsible for the boys actions, which is another good life lesson to learn... not taking responsibility for everything because that creates unnecessary tension.
@chidowuan4762
@chidowuan4762 6 жыл бұрын
Nihil Genus I think he "felt guilty" cause something he said made someone feel something bad instead of something good leading him towards that action (and not for the kid decision); and yeah I agree it was the kids decision to do that but, maybe as much as Will, the kid didn't thought it would escalate that far, and how were they supposed to know that? Life lessons are hard as much it was for Will for the better, maybe it was for the kid for the worst (hope it wasn't though), we don't even know how was the life of that kid before that happened, neither do Will. Lets hope he is alive and ok and his life has taken off for the better instead of the worst :)
@SwoleCalibur

chidowuan The kid thought about and took the time to get his lock, put it around his finger and in his hand to smack somebody in the head. I wouldn't even come up with that. He knew excactly what he was doing and what the results would be. If this wouldn't have happened, he'd be in jail for something else. But good for Will to make the best out of a bad situation.

Thank you Will. This rings very true for me also. My words tend to have a very powerful effect on people also. When I am in a bad space and people test me I have even been threatened with wanting to get a hitman to take me out, etc. I am also the opposite when in a good space. This inspired me to re-asses this power also and use it for good instead of pressing peoples buttons, even if they hurt my feelings and I want to get at them. I hold grudges for a very long time. I think people like us who can read others and know what to say instinctively to get an emotional reaction out of others owe it to ourselves to work at being in a good space. I know when I am I try to make the world a better place instead. You inspire me to be a better version of myself again. You teaching about facing fear in your movies is very apparent to me. You use your medium as a tool to teach people and I admire that. I see now your issue with fear and why you have taught those lessons in some movies. Thank you for your body of work. I hope your wife appreciates the man you truly are and shows you that respect better in future. Much love.

The fact that Will Smith had that kind of insight and forethought in the 9th grade shows that he was destined for greatness... most of us are thinking of grades, guys, games and girls... but Will Smith is thinking about how words can carry weight and impact people... I had to learn this as an adult and still f up... but wow... words are really like a sword and can do serious damage... but words also can uplift and empower so... moral of the story is “choose your words wisely”... thanks Will...

Things that could make Will feel even worse about it than he already does. Or he could find him as an outstanding human being. Making the moral of this story null and void. xD Figured I would add my 2 sense. Either way, it would be cool to know what happened. :P

Our words and actions can make and break a child. The preschool is in the school where most of the kids go after they are 4 years old (school system in the netherlands is very different i think) i see kids who i had in my preschool from age 4 to 12 or 13 and many of them come and tell me what a wonderful time they had, i always feel emotional and think "yess i did it i helped this kid and made a good impression" that is why i keep doing this job even though we get payed not nearly enough for it.
