Wow! I love your style! The way you did the grass, ah I just love it. So appealing to me, visually as well as inspiring for my own artwork. I think this piece is amazing. If only everyone knew how difficult it is to paint something that is all or mostly all white - not easy. You did this piece justice for sure!
@SandraJSchultz8 жыл бұрын
Hi Sarah. Thanks so much! Yes, white subjects are difficult, but more so when starting on a white background. I found that if I put my main shadow color down first and then paint with zinc white (not titanium white) it is a lot easier. The two whites are very different. I hope you give it a try!

I see you sketched the Egret out first. Zink White. I tried to find Zink White , but others also like it, and usually the area for that White paint is empty. I like your choice of Music, some use a sleepy, soft romantic music , that puts me to sleep. I like go beat when I work that is full of ENERGY. However, I can see why their music works for them, because I tried it when working on more delicate parts,

Awesome - wow, never thought of clay, what kind? Thanks for sharing!
@SandraJSchultz8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Leah. I just went down by the nearby beach and grabbed a couple of chunks of clay that were sticking out of the sand. The clay there is very dark raw umber. Very pretty. It would work with any kind of clay - whatever is near you. Just get the rocks and sticks out, mix with wood glue and add water until it is the consistency you want. It's quite pretty all by itself. Happy painting! Sandy

Sandra J Schultz ...so when u use clay..do you treat it with a fungicide?
@SandraJSchultz7 жыл бұрын
No. The clay is very thin and dries quickly. Then after the picture is finished it is varnished, so no problem with mold.

Very nicely done, Sandra. I am curious as to whether you used a clay coloured board, or a clay covered board? If the latter, did you experience any strange absorption issues as this dried? I am experimenting with clayboards here, and welcome your knowledge. Thank you for the video!
@SandraJSchultz6 жыл бұрын
Hi KalahariKAri. For this painting I used a piece of plywood which I stiffened with boards at the edge - like canvas stretcher bars. Then I went to the beach and dug up a little dark colored clay. I mixed the clay with water and wood glue (I used Titebond II), until is was a good consistency for applying with a brush. I still have that painting and the clay did not crack or peel. I don't think it will, as it had a good portion of glue. I hope you give it a try! Happy painting.
@KJensenStudio6 жыл бұрын
Well, that was brilliant and resourceful of you! Yes, if I see some clay around I will try it, and thank you. :-)

Hi, This is a beautiful painting! I would love to know how you made your wood panel canvas with what I think must be a gesso of sorts. Would you divulge your formula for Clay, glue, water, base. I am an acrylic artist, do you think I could use it as a base for acrylics? I actually paint on canvas wrapped ACM (aluminum composite material) board but I’m wondering if I could apply your special clay gesso over a sanded down ACM board, no canvas. Thanks for sharing your talent!
@SandraJSchultz5 жыл бұрын
Hi FloorclothWhimsy. Thanks for your question. For the panel I cut a piece of nice birch plywood (1/4 inch I think), and cut boards to attach to the back to make a cradled board. I varnished the plywood - both front and back, but can't remember what kind of varnish I used. I went to the beach where I knew there were some pockets of clay sticking out of the sand and gathered a few handfuls. I tried not to get the sand. Then I put the clay in a bucket and added what was probably about a 50/50 mix of "Titebond II" glue and water to the consistency I wanted for brushing onto the board. I brushed it onto the board. The color of the board in the video is the natural color of that clay. I have used clay backgrounds before and have found they are very stable. The material sticks to the surface very well because of the glue, and the glue also waterproofs the clay. You could spray the panel with water and it won't loosen or soften. Because it is so stable, I would think that an experiment under acrylics would probably turn out good.I'd love to hear how it goes,Sandy

Love this! I wondered if you had to prime the pannel with anything before painting oils on it ? Or did you just jump straight in with oil paint on the raw surface of your clay /glue mix? Thanks so much for taking the time to film this !
@SandraJSchultz5 жыл бұрын
Hi Laura, I did varnish the panel so that the wood would not be affected by moisture (both front and back).
