Today I'm painting a beginner friendly semi-abstract sunset scene using a limited palette of just 3 colors, Yellow Ochre, French vermilion, and indigo, you can use any similar colours. The idea is to try to paint a wet in wet sky as loosely as possible, aiming for a bright glow across the middle with subtle cloud effect, and then use a clever little trick to paint a perfect setting sun. Once dry, it is all finished off with silhouetted trees. It may look difficult, but it is really just a series of simple steps put together, it may take a bit of practice to get the hand og the wet in wet techniqie, but that's part of the fun!
I'm using Saunders Waterford 100% cotton cold pressed 140lb/300g weight paper, 11" x 15"/28cms x 38cms, my paper is taped to my board with ordinary decorators masking tape and is at an angle of about 45 degrees so gravity will help me paint. I use a large falt/hake brush and a small calligraphy brush, but use whichever brushes you have, a large flat and a small round will be perfect.

Your sky's are so beautiful, I watched about a dozen tutorials some twice and I thought I can do this. Boy was I wrong. You make it look so easy. I rubbed the surface off the paper trying to make it work. I'm going to need a lot of practice.

So blissful. Just sigh inducing satisfaction sweeping all the trials of the day away. Simple, quick and more than enough to inspire an open to drift into worlds that can only exist in ones imagination. Lovely. No familiar places to remember from days in the distant past, ( I do enjoy those though). Instead, reflections of another's travels. Lois, although this is not technical in the least, it hold such strong appeal. Well done that lady.

Hi Lois, I LOVE this painting, and can't wait to try it. You are so gifted, and a wonderful teacher! I'm a little confused by the color indigo, which I've always known to be blue...but in this painting, at least on my screen, it appears more gray/brown...? Is that the effect of painting it over a wet yellow ochre??
@LoisDavidsonArt
@LoisDavidsonArt 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, indigo is a dark blue, when 3 primary colours mix they neutralise each other to produce various greys and browns as has happened here
@irisalton8372

When I have done silhouette paintings like this I usually end up disappointed when the darks dry. If I try to darken them too much to start with to avoid the dried lighter color they can look blotchy or chalky. Is there a way to glaze over the dark when it is dry to keep it looking fresh or a color combo that works consistently? This is lovely but I must be missing something when I try this type of work...

Use very rich paint almost straight from the tube and paint quickly with the largest brush you can get away with. The finish of the trees etc in a loose painting like this doesn’t have to be smooth, in fact some variety of texture and tone can help to better suggest the landscape than a smooth wash.
