Paint Finish with a Cheap HVLP Electric Spray Gun? --- FULL IN DEPTH TEST --- Erbauer 700w

Have you ever wondered what paint finish you can get with a cheap HVLP spray gun? I put this Erbauer 700w HVLP to the test. This test was to see how you would get on with your interior woodwork - doors, architrave, skirting, maybe even furniture? Lets see how I get on.

If they are ever available again you can get this model Erbauer HVLP in Screwfix, otherwise keep an eye out for second hand ones. They are great for painting fences and any general outdoor wood treatment. There is a Sealey model version which is exactly the same, you can get that here:

Had some technical difficulties on this one 🙄 Unfortunately the 4k setting on my camera knocked out the focus. I also had to drop from 4k to HD on upload. I filmed most of this in the evenings so quality isn't the greatest. Best to watch on 1.5 playback then slowdown on parts to see the finish 👍

Bought a gun for spraying some retrofitted ikea bits which I'm planning to clad with other furniture panels. Wanted to spray to keep the joints clean. Bit worried about how it will turn out now but in for a penny. Loved the video, really nice to see someone testing naturally rather than scripted versions. Feels just like what we all do in our own homes. I'm more interested now in that self build!

Cool, which one did you get? You might get a better finish with different paint maybe 🤷‍♂️ if you use a water based paint you could thin it down with floetroll instead of water, that might help? I've just recently bought a used Pro spray set up 😬

I have often thought about buying this sort of equipment over the many years I have been painting but I was always put off by the thought that I would get blockages or the paint would run etc so never did buy one. Your video has certainly convinced me that I made the right decision, I don't even think it would be quicker when you take into consideration all the masking involved to stop the overspray. I am sure that a professional using the right equipment would do a great job and for outside work like staining a fence it would be OK but not for me. I will stick to the roller and paintbrush. Yeah this is great for outside work and much quicker for staining decking/fences/sheds but no good for much else. I do have access to a professional airless sprayer which I will probably use at some point. I am interested in getting a professional hvlp though, which I will need for a few projects I have in mind. I'm keeping an eye out for a second hand one as they're pricey!

Used same equipment on a few exterior metal cladding panels, (the grainy finish ) in gloss, also roller shutter doors, sprayed my van as well ( semi gloss ) cellulose paint, just made sure my mix was ok ( about 80% thinners to 100% paint ) personally I was happy with it, did an ok job , I wouldn't use it on a Porsche lol , But for speed and price its ok as said, hope this helps : )

Some of the spray guns can be a faff. My paint man has got quite a powerful compressor type thing he uses on large spaces, but a roller tends to be less of a faff with masking etc. Good video Aiden

😂 They're good for painting or staining stuff outside (fences or sheds) but not for getting a good finish on anything for indoors.

@@snaubdca7yebf that sounds like the way to go. My bro in law uses his airless for woodwork, ff tips and you're good. I've got a graco 9.5 now so that's what I'll use for inside. Seen guys on fb groups swear by a gentilin compressor and gun though.

@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT do you know how much paint he wastes each time? if i'm painting two pieces of furniture, it's a lot to be throwing away a litre of paint each time! i just don't know the figures exactly. ah graco the dream. that one can spray upside down i think!

@@snaubdca7yebf just had a chat with him, he said its about half a litre-ish to prime but you can recover some of it at the end if you just run it without the pipe in the paint (turn the pressure low). So you don't really lose loads of paint, you just can't use it. He has a graco 395 and bought a hopper for woodwork but only tends to use it on bigger jobs as its a big faff. As well as the tip you have to change the filters too and you have to work really really quick especially with the smaller tips. Sounds like a challenge that's for sure.

Watering down/thinning Wood finishes other than primers are never a good idea as you change the bonding and cause inconsistencies as it dries hence the orange peeling. Just imagine if deluxe for example could get as good a finish with a 50% diluted product they most definitely would. Great information tho really enjoyed the effect rolling it at the end did almost a tate modern piece.

Dulux does dilute alot of products now paint used to be really thick. now when I buy 10 ltrs of paint it will go through a paint sprayer without even having to add water ...

Shouldn't you strain the paint before spraying to avoid the nozzle clogging up?

That's a good idea yes. I can't recall the nozzle clogging up on this as its quite big, that's why it doesn't atomise the paint well

I bought this before seeing your video. I have not used it yet. The box contains a 2mm nozzle. How would that impact on the quality of the spraying?

I am thinking of spraying some kitchen doors, the doors would be removed, so no need for masking up, would you recommend giving it a go?

Yeah but I wouldn't use this machine. I think you would get a much better finish using a fine nap roller than a low powered single stage hvlp. If you're spraying, the minimum I'd go is a 3 stage turbine hvlp or a wagner 3500 xvlp. You can find them around 2nd hand for OK money then sell it after maybe? Or if you're like me... Keep it 😂

Nope, you would have to thin the paint down too much. It's quicker with a roller as long as you have a short extension bar on. I'd only use an airless sprayer for inside walls, I think the cheapest one of them is 300 odd

You would have got a far better finish if you had taken the time to properly prepped the wood, and judging by your hesitant stop start spraying technique you don't have much experience in spraying. Practice, practice, practice.

I'm not sure it would have made any difference, it's a 2.7 from what I remember and it's low powered so the paint needs thinning too much, that results in an orange peel finish no matter how much I prep or keep a wet edge etc I have a graco 9.5 now anyway. I'd only use that erbauer to spray fences
