I'm not a painter, in fact I'm a computer geek, but a large tech-tuber has recently been talking about his experience with painters messing up his new house and that's how I found this video. There are clips of him ranting about the situation and I think it'd be interesting seeing your reaction to those clips. The more glossy, the easier it is to clean, wipe down and it won’t come off on the towel being used. Flat reminds me of colored chalk in texture and almost acts that way when you wipe it down. It’ll come off onto the towel. Thanks for keeping it simple!

Excellent explanation of the various paint finishes. I've always been partial to satin for most walls, mainly because it cleans well. But appearance wise I admit less sheen would probably look better.

Finally! A bell went off in my head clearing the mass confusion of interior paint sheen options. With your highly succinct yet thorough short presentation of linear scale from flat up to gloss, I think I finally graduated the confident knowledge of interior paints selections test. So Thank You very much! You most assuredly saved me the expense of making a mistake in purchase selection this very day, also the wasted labor I was surely on path toward wrong application. Meaning double the trouble, at least. My time is very valuable to me at present, even more so than despised current high costs for paints, etc., simply because I've inadvertently become overloaded in accumulating mountain of DIY projects (opened can(s) of worms - on steroids; one step forward, two steps back; no light at the end of the tunnel; Does it ever END!) involved now in near TOTAL refurbishment of my little, old house - for my retirement years. Like the benefits of 'common sense' and 'KISS' (keep it simply stupid) I think you pulled off a gem of a valuable show here; I mean you aced it in my mind. And I am now off to my various DIY'er stomping grounds to confidently make the expensive purchases of the various required paints , each specific for it's own part of parts, towards the master project (s) of total house refurb. This is shaping up in my mind now. And along with the mass of tools and supplies required, just for this sector of the total project, and even for such a tiny home, I am making a major commitment/investment of both my own labor and limited funds, towards a happier retirement in my twilight years. Much thanks again goes to Jeremy for this very practical video, which really won it for me.

We typically use Emerald Matte on bathroom ceilings these days. Airflow is also an important factor. Running the fan or getting the door open soon after showering is a good move if the airflow is an issue.

Duration matte specifically is shinier than typical mattes. Emerald matte is more like a traditional matte. Emerald matte is my go-to wall paint currently.

Thank you! Great video. I am a mural artist and I paint exterior as well as interior murals. I use Sherwin Williams paints and primers. To insure duration of my murals for exterior I use Duration or Latitude is Satin. For interior I have used the eggs but I will try the matt after seeing this video. I have experienced that matt paint in mural work builds up all looks odd compared to satin finish.

Excellent video, brother! I’m painting my small interior pantry a Tiffany box blue color. 🤣 For the (textured) walls, I’m debating in between flat and matte since I really dislike textured walls in my new build. Would you recommend flat for textured walls instead of matte? For the shelves, I have a sample of my color in Satin, but I’ll probably go with semi-gloss for the closet shelves and base molding. I’ll keep everything the same color, just different finishes. Thank you again!

I’d probably still go with matte over the textured walls. Its gives you a bit more durability and even going with a flat finish won’t hide the texture. Semi-gloss would be my choice for the trim and shelves so I think you’re making the right call. Good luck with your project!

I want to be able to put wallpaper on my drywall which has an oil-based primer coat. Which sheen is best, bearing in mind that in future, I would like to be able to remove the wallpaper without ripping the drywall paper, so it’s important for me to use the correct sheen as you’ve wonderfully explained.

As long as your primed you should be good to put wallpaper on the wall. We don't wallpaper at all, so I am not an expert. With the wallpaper guys we work with, we will prime bare drywall and they will paper over top of it. No paint needed is my experience. Good luck!

I just came out of a Sherwin Williams store and leave with the same unanswered questions. Thankfully you take some time to explain and answer them. But I still have one more. I'm planning to paint the basement with (Sherwin Williams) black magic or black of night, trying to avoid reflection and have durability for the $$ but not breaking the bank. The project is wood ceiling and unfinished walls that are an insulated, precast concrete wall panels (Superior Walls). Now, my question is: What is the best paint for the job?..flat on ceiling and matte on walls? Thanks in advance.

That’s a bit of a unique scenario. The most efficient way to paint those surfaces is spraying, but you could use a brush and roller as well. Also, I’d recommend priming those surfaces with a P-5 primer before going over them with black paint. In my experience Emerald does the best with dark colors. Flat would look the best, but the matte will be a bit more durable. Flat on the ceiling and matte on the walls would work, or you could just use flat everywhere and then touchup when things get scuffed.

This is a good video thanks. I just drywalled a new house and they had it painted satin grey. Now there repainting the whole house. I see this happen all the time. Don't go higher than eggshell on new drywall. If you take a sponge and water to "clean" your glossy walls, your gonna have a streaky looking mess forever. You want to eliminate the glares. Also, the darker the shade of color the more naturally reflective it is. Also, sheen looks great on textures! Also, flat paint will compliment things that should be shiny - like floors or countertops or trim. But hey, everyones an artist.

Great to see this. As a painter I know these well but even the people who mix the paint are often very confused about the sheen. I've had sherwin guys tell me satin is less shiny than eggshell. Also as an aside, satin has become much more popular near me for trim now days. People don't like the gloss of semi-gloss anymore in my area.

Same here with the satin on the trim. It depends on the product but a lot of folks like the satin finish especially with a product like Advance from Benjamin Moore. I still like the Emerald Urethane in semi-gloss but it comes down to whatever the client prefers. Thanks for watching!

Another good explanation. May I ask if you have any experience with the velvet matte? Is that BM? I asked cause we’re getting ready to paint our entire home and it currently has eggshell and I don’t like it. But I’m afraid to paint it mat because I don’t want it looking flat? Somebody mentioned velvet mat? Do you have a video explanation on that?

So paint sheens are weird because they vary from brand to brand and they also vary within different lines of paint from a specific brand. I know of a few paints that have a velvet sheen, but I wouldn't recommend either of those products. Our go-to wall paint is Duration matte from Sherwin Williams. That paint comes in flat, matte, satin, and semi-gloss. The matte has a decent amount of sheen to it so it doesn't look flat, but it's slightly less shiny than an eggshell. We use Duration matte on about 95% of the jobs that we do.

Thanks CavSFC. Imperfections could be many things such as a gouges, old thick paint roller lines, nail pops, general defects in drywall, spackle spots, cracks ect.

Painting cabinets is a bit tricky. They need to be prepped properly for finish paint to adhere properly. Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel from Sherwin Williams and Advance from Benjamin Moore are both popular cabinet paints.

Most folks prefer a satin finish on kitchen cabinets. That's also the finish that the majority of kitchen cabinets come in from the factory if they're a solid color. Advance satin from Benjamin Moore or Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel from Sherwin Williams are both solid products for cabinets. Good luck with your project!

Is there any tricks to matching paint colour cards to a ceiling colour? I have trouble depending on the angle I look, it’s spikey concrete so can’t strip a sample either, I’ve done it 3 times now and it’s not what I had planned with a 20cm x 20cm patch, also does a fluffier roller make any difference, if so how, that stems from another problem I had going over a plaster patch on just dry wall, the plaster patch just kept looking smoother. I’ve subbed to see some interesting aspects!!! Thank you mate!!

Ok, from your comment I'm guessing you've had to patch a ceiling that already has some texture to it and once the repair is done you want to paint just the patched part and blend it into the same color. The best way to get the texture to match the existing texture is to add texture to the patch while the spackle is wet. We do this all the time. You can use a spackle blade, paint stir stick, or even a thick nap roller if the surrounding texture is similar. Put spackle on the repaired area then use a tool to replicate the surrounding texture as best you can. Once the spackle dries you can prime it and then hit it with your top coats. As far as color matching goes, that can be an issue. If you're using a color deck then you just need to hold it up to the existing ceiling and get even lighting on the color deck and the ceiling. You may need to use a flashlight or a headlamp. Get as close as you can with the color deck and if you're picking between two colors, I'd suggest going with the lighter one. You can also purchase a Color Matcher from Sherwin Williams. The new one is pretty decent. It's a portable device that you can pair to you phone. You use the device to scan the old color, then it'll give you a color code that you can take to Sherwin Williams and have mixed up. We've had decent success with that and that may get you closer than you using the color cards. If I'm way off the mark with my responses, then leave a new comment outside of this thread. Great information. I'm getting ready to spray ceilings and walls the same color. My dilemma is the finish. And I will be using Behr. Part of the home will have flat ceilings and the other textured. Please lmk. Thank you

We don't use Behr paint much so I'm not familiar with their finishes. We typically do flat paint on ceilings and eggshell paint on walls. Maybe you could do matte paint which is in-between flat and eggshell. Good luck!

What about a master walk-in closet with shelves and drawers in the middle of it ? I need to re-do it all and have been researching if I need to sand it first. It’s not peeling or anything, it’s just dirty from 25+ years of country livin’ in a high humidity climate. So I’d like to get it nice once again. This video def. Helped me identify what to use on the walls, ceiling and trim, now just need to figure out middle section…. I’m guessing same as trim with a semi gloss… could be way off though. Thanks in advance !

Hi there. Sanding won't hurt. You want to make sure your walls are prepped well, such as no peeling paint, holes, gouges, cracks ect. So spackle and caulk are your friends. Make sure to prime all spackle spots after you sand them. Semi gloss is great on trim. For your walls if their is a lot of moisture/humidity you could use Duration matte from Sherwin Williams. Its what we use in bathrooms. You could also use Duration flat which has a lower sheen. Typically we use flat paints for closets, but if you want some more durability upgrade to a matte. Hope this helps.

@@SuperVassarBrothers Terrific, I will do this for sure! The middle section that has drawers for both sides and shelves above it that you can walk around…. I believe it’s called a wardrobe? The wood in the shelves and front of drawers has shown a residual build up over the years… not sure if it was mold or what…. But I will wipe it all down, wet sand a little where it’s extra dirty ….and I think I’ll apply the Duration to this built in area as well to prevent that dirty grime from appearing again down the road! Thanks for the kind words. Its personal preference for ceiling color and wall color. For 95% of our clients we do white ceilings in flat, white trim in semi gloss, and walls whatever color they want in eggshell or matte.
