My cabinets needed doors and drawer fronts, which I made out of MDF in the 'shaker style', then tried to paint with HVLP.

I do like that green. They look awesome Paul and the practice is invaluable for the 'proper' ones inside.

This is great. I am about to make my cabinets for my shop. I keep going back and forth between clearing them or painting them. I really like how your’s look with the paint.

Thanks for the tip on the coping sled; I have been using my mitre guage but your sled looks much more stable and safe, particlularly with big cutters.. Cheers

I think mitre gauges can work but you need to have the fence perfectly parallel with the mitre track otherwise it can introduce some binding, and knowing me I'd spend 4 hours trying to dial in the parallelness perfectly before realising I hadn't put the fence in the right spot 😅

Cabinets turned out great, with hvlp you need to make sure the tip size works with the material youre spraying. For Clear finish’s like lacquers/shellacs I like a smaller 1- 1.2mm tip. For thicker finishes, like paints a bigger 2mm tip works better imo. Some guns have multiple tips but getting old paint in clear coats is no fun, better keep seperate guns in the long term.

Yeah I thought I'd be pushing it a little with 1.4mm. I'm not in a rush to clear coat anything with it - certainly not without a booth to mitigate bugs - any recommendations on sprayguns that won't make my wallet very sad? 😁

@@TheWoodKnight The sprayguns from actual automotive paint suppliers that are around $100 are pretty good, if you want something a little better the Devilbiss guns are nice and sub $300. I sent you some links on Instagram

It's looking very tidy. Dislike MDF with a passion, but what my customer wants.... I've been wearing my Air Shield Pro helmet quite a lot as well as Dust extractors going. I've been spraying for a few years now as it definitely gives a better finish. Better to do 3 - 4 light coats rather than to heavy and get over saturation and the equivalent of runs

I'm also not a fan of MDF, but it has its uses - cost aside, if I used plywood for the doors and wanted a flat finish it would have been days applying filler and primer to get it smooth! Same goes for veneering, it's hard to argue with the dead flatness. I'm also always shocked at the range in quality of MDF - I wouldn't say the stuff I got was "nice to work with", but compared to greenshed MDF it at least wasn't super fluffy! A few years back, I briefly had an AirShield, but at the time Trend had discontinued the support for hearing protection that clipped on (used non-standard industry hardhat earmuffs). Do you have something you use for hearing protection at the same time as the airshield?

@@TheWoodKnight I have the version that you clamp the muffs on the top but I find it too heavy, so I have a set of Isotune buds, and or a pair of reusable buds on a flexible plastic straw like band that wrap around the back of your neck.

Thanks for the video. Just what I needed. For my workshop I should probably just make plain melamine doors but all that white melamine is very... white. So I am also considering shaker style.

I've 'enjoyed' the starkness of all-white-melamine in the workshop for years, or so I thought until I actually hung the doors... it creates such a more comforting environment. To be fair, give it a year and a fine film of dust does make it less stark 😁

Spraying has been a weird topic for me, every time I give it a go I found myself annoyed with the clean up and that it worked faster for me to just roll it, I do want to establish a spray booth in the garage as I want to like the process, but just don’t get the results I’d like out of it.

Hah, you're not wrong about the cleanup. While I have a hose outside, there isn't a sink. For the rinsing of parts I have to go to the laundry trough and unfortunately my cat has decided the most fun thing he can do is help me. Half the time I spend trying to keep his paws out of dirty paint water 😁 I think it's probably a volume thing about whats faster - 10 drawer fronts? Roller and possibly even a brush will win. 30? Probably spraying.

Silly question - the shims? Are they a specialist device or simply window shims? Thanks

Just bog standard plastic window shims! www.bunnings.com.au/handiy-shim-1-10mm-packer-handy-pack-134-pack_p1041480 I bought this bucket of shims years ago now, and they're great for workshop stuff. No idea how they work for windows 😆
