PAINTING 350z CENTER DASH ! I messed up ...

I'm so hyped on the 350z DRIFT BARBIE car. It's been fun making her pretty ... but I'm ready to hit the track again!! :)

It wasn’t the paint, the parts were contaminated, oil, Grease etc. this had happened with a rear bumper! I redone my bumper 4 times! i got tired and I asked an expert, and that’s what I learned that day! Keep up the content 👍

It wasnt clean enough. You needed to get a grease and oil removal spray then let it dry. Do it twice... then hit it with alcohol and use a heat gun to hear dry it better.

agree not cleaned well enough, also need to be wearing gloves as oil from hands will recontaminate the parts as your prepping

Get a bug and tar cleaner or, if you have access, a quality parts degreaser. Alcohol will evaporate before it removes all of the oils. And peeling it is the best way. If you ever have to peel a part that is too thin, just spray a heavy coat over it and wait for it to dry the peel it

With the Rustoleum brand of paint when painting any plastic I have always done a couple of light coats of adhesion promoter before laying down my first coat 😉

That “interior” clip remover is really good for other body clips, however, interior clip removal tools are normally plastic, which helps with not taking big gouges out of the trim. ✌🏼

Ok so typically when painting interior pieces i like to use a good towel saturated with rubbing alcohol to remove the interior shine products that are usually on them. Then when u spray it lays down nicely...

That looks really good Collete. I did my Wifes mini R53 with Plumb crazy pearl on the dash and door panels. I put the 2012 mini's interior guts in her 2003, I left the dash R53 it is cooler in my opinion vs the R56. I matched the grills rims and suspension parts and then we painted it M3 charcoal with some purple flake. It was her first hot rod so I went crazy for her. Bigger twin screw Sprintex, 800cc inj. modified DC sports header. Thumper stroker conversion. clutch etc It wasn't bad for a mini. 260HP. Lots of tq steer but a fun lil thing.

Maybe you could do the silver Gauge Bezels in Fluro Yelllow? Along with the silver rings of the heater control knobs? Maybe even get some vinyl stickers made up for the gauge lettering in Fluro Yellow, in Barbie (Brush script) font? Keep the theme going on the inside! Loving the ridiculousness.

Just a heads up it's not super common to have a bad can of spray paint but it sure does happen from time to time. What was most likely the issue is there may have still been some contaminant on the plastic which caused the paint to be hydrophobic and crack. Try using a paint preparation wash also known as wax and grease remover and make sure the surface is completely bone dry before applying paint. Another helpful tip is to shake the paint can for about 3mins as the more mixed up the paint is the better chance you have of it not separating. This is especially useful when the paint cans have been on shop shelves or in storage for long periods of time. Most spray paints will last for 2 years and spray the same as the day they were made if stored correctly. Hope this is informative and useful to you. Keep up the awesome work. @Colette Davis - Pro tip - it is perfectly fine to use spray cans multiple times over a very long period, the trick is - after using it you turn it so that the spray nozzle is at the bottom and spray it until only gas comes out - this is to clean the nozzle.

its because its a textured surface.. you have to high build prime and sand it down to get into all those small cracks first.. then when it's nice and smooth, u can go back and do your plasticoat pink on top of the primer..

Good you used peak coat.Take it off.I just painted mine color shift galaxy blue.Gotta scotch guard the plastic or use something to rough it up.Use rustoleum 2x way better then plasti dip

it sprays differently because of injector got some of the plastidip dryed inside. Just clean the injectory when you are done spraying by holding can upside down and pressing injector"button" down till you dont see any color anymore. thats from my own experience with spray cans.

Just a helpful tip, but if any of the plasti dip chips or starts to peel, just spray some plasti dip on a Q tip and dab it where you need it. :)

Could have been a combination of a lot of things. Painting bare plastic is tough in the first place. It retains a lot of oils even if you think you have it clean. Best practice is to use an etch primer or adhesion promoter like Bull Dog. Then you literally have to dust on coats and let it flash off really well to get full coverage before applying any wet coats to get the smooth finish you want. Still turned out looking good!

Your supposed to turn the paint can up side down when your done to clear the tip. Usually says it on every can. But you definitely had contaminants that caused that. Rubbing alcohol unless it's like 99% it not appropriate for cleaning for paint. You also should have used an adhesion promoter since the parts are plastic. Wax and grease remover is the best to use. And clean clean clean clean and clean again. Also use light coats to build the color you may be rushing coats and causing the lower layers of paint to reactivate. Light coats and longer flash time can help some times.

Do a couple of dry coats before a wet coat. Should lock it down no problem. Even if clean it you run a chance of fish eys and lifting. Always drop coat first!!
