The main difference between Blanchitsu and the Grimdark style is essentially two things: While techniques and the reliance on oils/enamels and pigments applies to both, Blanchitsu, named after Warhammer artist John Blanche, usually also involves considerable conversion work as well as the limitation to a certain set of colours, in this case what is referred to as the Zorn palette, avoiding most blue/cool tones. Thus, you could say that Blanchitsu is a specialised subcategory of the Grimdark style.

This model looks awesome, I've been trying to get an effect like this for my successor chapter for ages and nothing has been working how I want it to. Going to try following your technique now, any tips for making it a more dark grey tone instead of black? I was thinking about just trying less coats of nuln oil after the grey drybrushes, or if I should be using slightly lighter greys for each drybrushing step, or a heavier drybrush of the lighter colours. Cheers for the awesome video
@SprayBlackStudios3 жыл бұрын
All of the options you have mentioned would likely work but personally I'd probably combine a slightly lower number of coats of Nuln Oil with pushing the highlights just a little bit higher. You still want to get all that depth of tones in there, especially if you want it to read as grey. I'd love to see what you come up with! 👍

Wow youre incredibley talented... I've been thinking about getting back into the hobby after about 20 years as my kids are now starting to become interested. This has inspired me start a black templer army, quick questions are the upgrade kits usable with the new primaris models? And what would you consider the most important paints to pick up to start with?
@SprayBlackStudios3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Glad to hear you are getting back in to the hobby! A lot of the pieces of the upgrade bits are usable with the Primaris minis, if you get the multipart Primaris models as opposed to the easy to build ones you can easily use things like the heads and shoulder pads. Most arms are usable but the primaris bodies are a tiny bit wider so if you have two hands holding the same thing (like a bolter) it can require some work to get them to fit.

Would not it be better if you shaded with blue wash after nuln and agrax so in the end the bue shadow remains a bit? cuz if you wash first with blue and in the end with the black does not the black cover all of the blue?
@SprayBlackStudios3 жыл бұрын
You definitely can, though you will end up with a bit of a different look to it. By washing the blue first it means you'll get a bit less blue in the Highlights (which I don't really want) as the Nuln oil will dull it down. If you go afterwards then the blue tint will be stronger rather than weaker. Nuln oil is actually a fairly weak wash so something like Drakenhof does still come through although I don't really want it to be too strong. If you were to wash the blue afterwards and then maybe do a very light drybrush of Grey then that may still give the desired result.

That's a good point, not one I've really thought about before but you're right, maybe GW figured that Templars was more recognisable?
@RainMakeR_Workshop3 жыл бұрын
@@SprayBlackStudios Maybe, but ignorance is also a possibility. A black cross on a white field is pretty iconic as the symbol of the Teutonic order (though yellow was incorporated later). Its a red cross on a white field for the Templars. They could still be called the "Black Templars" because of their armour being black if they used a red cross. I mean its no big deal either way. Just something I always found odd. Though I think if I ever did a Black Templar army, I would go with red crosses on white surcoats and the sergeants would have red crosses on black surcoats. Just like real life Templars had. Just for the fun of it though.
