Do you suggest painting inside the holes of a green tree? That way no white will be visible around the bulbs

Does it matter if you do a base coat first before putting the main color on? I have a huge un-painted christmas tree that I'm dying to complete & use. Only thing I have to acquire is the lighted base for it aside from the pegs but the lighted base is important right now.
