How is it holding up. I prepped and painted my garage door and it looked great. One year later it started peeling like crazy. I am currently wire brushing it, sanding, priming the bad spots with self etching automotive primer. It will be primed with Sherwin Williams acrylic latex enamel. Then topcoated with SW acrylic latex paint. I am very disappointed with the Rustoleum Oil based enamel. Hope yours holds up better.
@ToolsAndI5 жыл бұрын
I painted mine a little over a year ago and its holding up well so far. I also have to say that the only prep I did was to sand with steel wool and wash with soapy water the day before I painted.
@bpd84265 жыл бұрын
It sometimes happens if a surface wasnt sanded to good which in turn the paint doesnt have a good adhesive bond but it could also be poor quality of paint or moisture traped under the paint job and depending where you live painting at the wrong time of year could be trouble for the paint.
@bpd84265 жыл бұрын
Oh and I forgot if you live in an arid desert like place oil based isnt to good of a choice it will get hairline cracks within the first year the acrylic would be better because it can stretch better on metal garage doors I haven't painted in years but it's one job I sometimes think about going back to i use to paint the big transformers for Entergy it was a little nerve racking at first because we had to paint them mostly while they were live but we got use to it i also painted circuit cities before they went bankrupt lol it's been a while for sure.
@rickysaldana98533 жыл бұрын
if the original paint on your garage door was water based latex then the oil based paint would wrinkle and crack out due to poor adhesion. whether youre going oil over latex or latex over oil you gotta prep it to bare bones and id advise priming

how many gallons did you use ?

I think it was just about a gallon I used. I did buy two gallons.
@dennisl49614 жыл бұрын
@@ToolsAndI thank you, seemed a dumb question at first, i asked because the airless spray needs to be flushed with paint so... a gallon might not be enough.. just being frugal and dont want to buy another gallon and end up collecting dust.

Why does the sprayer sound like a poorly greased bearing?
@ToolsAndI5 жыл бұрын
This is an airless pump and it certainly has a different sound to a regular pressurized sprayer.
@casey3603605 жыл бұрын
@@ToolsAndI I've used high-end airless sprayers in the past for work, they didn't sound as squeaky as this one. I was hoping you say something along the lines of "the camera picks it up more than you will." Do you still use it? Noisy I can work with if it'll keep working over time.
@ToolsAndI5 жыл бұрын
@@casey360360 I still use it, no problems. This is a Harbor Freight tool so it is not by any means high end. However it has solid reviews and it presents an amazing value. I recommend watching other videos of the same machine to compare the sound.
@casey3603605 жыл бұрын
@@ToolsAndI I shall. I can deal with the noise if it's a good sprayer. These new HF "name brands" aren't as bad as people say they are, I've got a full cart of automotive tools all HF earthquake, Pittsburg pro, etc. They've outlasted my Snap-On/Matco mix of tools so far with the same amount of use. I'm hoping that quality has transferred over to these odd for HF products.

Radial strokes??? 😂😂😂 Three different professional painters that came in by my house to give me quotes on painting the exterior were all impressed with the results I got painting this door by myself. You are trying to pound you chest like a gorilla and tell me "you don't know what you're doing". Radial strokes, 😜😝😆😂

first coat i always spray vertical, i do finish coats sideways on garage doors, its open to speculation but finish coats going sideways are harder for eyes to catch if you get some kind of lines or incase you missed something that spraying vertically made you miss..... this garage door looks like it has a sideways grain pattern i would personally have finish coated it sideways but to each their own as long as the finished product looks good theres a million ways to get there

For a job this size it would seem like a roller would be the better option. That is, until your roller doesn’t fit in all the contours and shapes of the door. An air sprayer gives you superior results with a happy customer.
