The key is super light coats and a gloss black base for the best possible result.

That product looks great as it is sprayed, but my experience has been that it has poor durability (rubs off easily, even when fully ‘cured’). And as others have said, applying a clear over it for protection changes the appearance in such a way that it just looks like metallic silver. I would love to know how that stuff reacted when gasoline was inevitably dripped on it in this application.

Took the words right out of my mouth. I have yet to figure out a clear coat for it. So frustrating!!

Long and the short of it is, you basically can’t. I did the hard yards and went on a crusade for 6months haha 😅😭😭The microscopic reflective particles that stack together to create the chrome appearance are what gives it that lustrous look.. the minute another layer goes ontop, it flattens all the microscopic “glitter flakes” and then you’re up sh!t creek haha , if you have a previously chromed surface there is a great two step system (but it has to be over top of real chrome coated metal, no etch or primer.. I’ll add the link

Electroplating machines are the go.. for a couple $100 you can buy a decent pen 🖊️ type plating machine. A waaay more cost effective way than a “bath” type electroplating system-because the “pen” style Machine is basically the same application style as a quill and ink. You just dip the felt tip in the liquid and slowly stack layers on Rather than having to buy heaps of expensive solution that you have to fully submerge items in.. Ali express have a fair few pen electroplating machines , if you pay less than $200 (AUD) don’t bother, Pen style Machines are way more versatile too, as you can do the badges of cars etc without removal/or damage to the surrounding painted areas.

Alternatively, you can do 4-5 coats of colour , slowly over a couple of days to make sure every layer cured properly , followed by an enamel or 2pac clear, then cut polish the sh!t out of it and buff it back up to a gloss finish and viola 🤌🏼🥲

Looks great! How long did you wait between each coat of the metallic paint to let it dry?

How has it held up without clear?
@timsolomon8352 Жыл бұрын
This looks good, but how did it hold up? My experience with that particular silver spray paint is that oils, even from your skin will rub the metallics off.
@DustyGroundHog9 ай бұрын
Yea looks good if you never touch it after it is done does not hold up to gas.

Impressive, it looks like the tank was sanded or scruffed up before the 1st coat of chrome paint was laid down over it? Now I'm wondering if it would hold up to the high heat of a car engine if you painted valve covers, or manifolds.
@motorcyclemayhem69662 жыл бұрын
The primer was sanded with 600 grit. Might work on valve covers but probably wouldn't hold up to high heat of manifolds.

Chrome is a plating, none of these "chrome" paints really look like chrome but it's the best you're gonna get without actually getting it plated.
