I drew a profile-construct very lightly on the Canson Mi-teintes Paper in my sketchbook, then gave it two coats of clear gesso by Liquitex. Loving the limited palette of White, Black, Red and Yellow. I painted this portrait wet on wet, also called alla prima, or direct painting.

The highlight fleshtone is so clean. It amazes me it is done with such a limited pallet. Cesar, is the highlight on the nose and cheek just white tinted slightly with yellow ochre and red? Would have loved to have seen your pallet midway through. Very inspiring video, thank you.

I'm new to oil painting. Every time I try alla prima painting, I just get mud. When I put new paint over an area that has wet paint on it, the two colors mix together and create mud, or just push paint and expose the canvas beneath. How do I avoid this? Do I use less or more medium with the paint?

Cesar, have you ever painted a portrait without using a reference? Is it possible? I know that you must understand anatomy as well as interaction with light and flesh to achieve a correct execution of subtle tones such as grey, blues, and greens. But is it possible to find these tones without using a reference?

He has other videos explaining what type of sketchbooks he uses. I recommend you to see them because they have a lot of information. He usually use sketchbooks with heavier paper weight so he can apply yeso.

Help. Every time I gessoed on paper and then painted, the paper buckled and the surface had uneven waves in it. What am I doing incorrectly?

Very thick paper, also probably need to stretch and bind the paper that's what water color artist do. Conversely I don't know this for a fact, but I imagine one could apply a very light layer and then come back for a few heavier layers.
