The painting came together when you darkened up the turquiose on the left...it brought the eye right up to the top cloud and made you stay there...the light turquiose hints in the heavens in the upper right made the mystery complete for me:))) it didn’t matter what you did after that....all the colors play together and pop when the values line up....learning how to see these values and use them is the adventure.

It's great to see tutorials like this for those of us who chose to paint with acrylics. I've found the technique is kind of a mix between oils and watercolors. Of course not only that but, I think it's a good approximation. Thanks for doing this for those who are not yet proficient or are just curious about the process. Personally I use acrylics in part, due to some health issues. When I'm done though, the result is indistinguishable from oils. If that's the result you're after then you have to use a good amount of varnish due to the sort of matte finish of acrylics.

So relieved to see your video, it’s has been about 2 years since I’ve painted and I have been second and third guessing myself that I should have used oils rather than acrylic, since the acrylics are drying too fast. Chuck I love your paintings, I am learning a lot from watching you. On many of your videos you mention that you use oil paints over the acrylics in your final stages of a painting and I am wondering what the advantage is to doing that. What can you achieve with oils that you can't do with acrylics? Do you use the new oil paints that are water soluble ? I was also wondering if you use acrylic mediums or water to extend the working time when using acrylics. My experience is that they can dry too quickly to get a good blend sometimes. I am new at this and have a lot to learn! Thank you for all your videos and tips along the way. Diane

I love your "got paint" shirts and want one (or 2 or 3, lol.) I've been sick in bed and love to watch your videos, so relaxing. I want to try this fabulously gorgeous painting when I can... I think this is your best sunset painting yet, that I've seen. Question: I don't have a decent orange, only some lower quality ones. Do you think it's necessary to wait and buy some or can I just mix magenta or red with yellow to achieve your effect? BTW, is your orange opaque? Thank you Chuck! P.S. I love your advice on keep trying, keep painting. We don't mind how long your videos are. We could watch you all day Chuck. We REALLY appreciate you! :-)
@chuckblackart6 жыл бұрын
Lol thank you! Yeah so I definitely think it helps to have a good cadmium Orange. Liquitex just got rid of their cadmium colors however, so I'm interested to see how their new cadmium-free oranges work. but magenta and yellow would give you a slightly darker orange, I would probably try to use a cadmium red and yellow to mix in Orange similar to the one that I got. And yes it is pretty opaque. anyways, I appreciate all those kind words, and I'm glad to hear that it's all helping. Thanks again!

@ligaskirbauska86525 жыл бұрын
richyray24 I think he’s climate is quite humid+ paints are fresh and fluid,not really heavy,heavy body.If you need you’re paint to last more you can fallow this trick,I do.i take food container of plastic,get let’s say peace of wet towels,fabrics,put freezer paper,or cooking paper,on it,put paint on paper.humidity of towel under will keep paint more humid.plus you can close palette with plastic lid if you go to drink something,wait layers to dry and so on.paint will stay good in container for days and weeks if needed,just experiment with what you have,no need for fancy,expensive containers,any will serve,I have used even from food delivery containers for that purpose and have those stuck up in tower,even water soluble oils,watercolours,just put sticker on top so you know what you have there,plus different type of colour schemes,so less paint will go to waste too.😉 hope it helps

Do these paints blend well bc of the brand? Or is it just your skills??
@chuckblackart6 жыл бұрын
I think brand could have something to do with it to some degree. cheap paint like liquitex basics or Michaels brand artist loft are much lower quality and yes I do think a professional quality paint has advantages over them

Yes, brand matters, and in the video, Chuck is seen using Golden Open Acrylics, as most of the professional painters here you see do, Open Acrylics are different them the traditional ones, they remain wet for up to 60 minutes and are reworkable for hours. You can find all about them here: www.justpaint.org/extending-the-acrylic-range-developing-open-acrylics/
@@TessMArt why do you keep saying this?? in the video he's "seen using" liquitex soft body, same as in the materials links. do you work for the golden open acrylic marketing team or something? Maybe open acrylics could help some of the people here that (myself included) experience very fast drying times, but there's no evidence that's what's being used here, and he actually replied to another comment explaining that's NOT what he's using. and i quote --> "" Slow drying acrylics? Chuck Black Art Chuck Black Art 2 years ago Nope just regular. I use Golden fluid acrylics and liquitex soft body "" so what's your deal?

I discovered that if I put a painting away and look at it the next day with fresh eyes then I start to see it more objectively. Stepping back and looking at it from a distance is good but stopping and taking a break helps if I have been painting for a few hours. Especially with clouds and sunsets. I cannot always see what I'm doing in the "detail" phase. Blocking in is the fun and easy part for me. I love watching you paint!! It flows so well and you're really growing as an artist. It's so visible from here!!!!

I use that technique as well giving the work a day or two is really effective for identifying mistakes....

Another spectacular painting! And one of my favorite subjects. I prefer detail and realism and you do a beautiful job of bringing that into your work. I always look forward to your next one. Thank you!

How do paint this with acrylic? My acrylics just dry so fast😐
@Spiderboydk4 жыл бұрын
He mixes medium into the paint, which makes it dry slower.

The most important thing u can tell people is to keep their drawing paper at eye level, not to begin drawing on the bed or a table, this puts everything into perspective.

Great tutorial. However I thought so many times you had a stunning piece and then you changed it again, and again. Lol
