Definitely brushes for me, I think there would be a lot of over spray from spray cans and probably cost more too. Incidentally be careful with the angle grinder creating sparks as the metal in the spark is hot enough to embed its self into glass on the car at the front of your house. The metal dust can also stain cars if left and not washed off. Looks nice and smart those gates.

My problem is i work at british steel in scunthorpe and my car gets either covered in dust when its dry or lathered with the wet dust and crap when it rains. Did mine in Hammerite Green with Gold accents! (but then I Am different) Hammerite is a strange beast .... I go for the paint brush, 2" for speed. If it is normal paint, say a gloss (I always go for liquid) a radiator roller is by far the quickest. This method works well on gutters and downspouts too ;o) Changing the subject a bit to Rust. ..... If it is flaky you do need to remove it, but if only a light coating it may be worth painting it with Ferric Chloride. This is the active ingredient in many car rust treatments. It converts the rust to an inert black coating that will prevent further rusting. Gloves area good idea unless you want nicotine like stains on your hands! Simply wash off the excess after an hour and you are good to paint ;o)

This gate has less rust than mine yet I’m still planning to strip the rust and the old paint manually. Removing it with power tools seems uneven, way too aggressive in accessible areas and not at all in closed corners. The new paint will flake in those corners together with the old one. Not sure if you have the product in the UK, it's called POR15, it's used in the Automotive industry. The stuff will stop rust in its tracks and never come back. I rarely use a spanner to tighten the nut on a grinder. I just twist the disc tight by hand and the nut will nip the last bit when the grinder is put to work. Removing rust, l paint on phosphoric acid, go make a brew, get a biscuit or three and then wash it all off 30mins or so later and bingo, no rust!

As someone who worked making these gates for a living many moons ago re-coating on site was always done with a brush . If like you they had to be rubbed down we advised hamer rite for the finish as the only way to get complete smoothness was to dip and strip . This would have been done in the factory and then re-sprayed . Spraying on site was normally a no no as you have no control on the environment and overspray tended to get everywhere due to the wind . Unless you had a portable spray booth .

Gates, arrgh! I don't know how many times I've done my sister's gates over the years, not a job I like. I gave up on the hand/tool removal and went for a brush on stripper cum rust remover. Does a pretty neat job and a lot cleaner. BTW, that black button on your grinder, if you press and hold it in, you should be able to grab the disk by the other hand (use a work glove if you nave delicate pinkies) and turn it. You can use this to take disks off and to put them on. They'll auto tighten once you get them on. Was that a football I saw Hans nudging at the start? Getting a bit above himself, no? The gold adds a nice touch and they look great.

Normally you don't have to go all that far with removing all that surface rust with this type of gates, if you use a good special paint with rust inhibitor in it, it should do the trick. Soapy water also was unnecessary, a good wipe with some paint thinner it's enough. As for the way of applying paint, if you want a longer lasting protection it's best to use brush and roller, spray paint will fail in a year or two, the coats are way thinner than brushed paint.

Good question! I'm guessing they were powder coated initially, but don't know as this was a 2nd hand gate we installed. A few others in the comments have said paint is more hardwearing than thin powder coats. With brushing it on, it's unavoidable to get brushstrokes, but I like it.

Did you look at wire brushes for your drill or grinder? You can also get brass ones that aren't as harsh as steel ones. These can often get in tight spots. Another trouble with angle grinders is if they produce sparks, they can burn your car paint or windscreen if you're parked close. I possibly would of used some rust killer before painting too. The paints that claim direct to rust just contain the rust they don't convert it. Something like krust or jenolite. You don't have to use fancy car primer but even red oxide would of given a better protection against bumps and scrapes if used before paint. I always thought hammered finish was tougher than smooth but I could be wrong and not everyone wants their gates looking like a 70's milling machine. Little jobs like this make add up to make the whole property look good so worth doing!

Thanks! Yes, I tried a wire brush drill attachment and it didn't do much, but I don't think it helps that it's 1" diameter as it kept spinning off, out of control on the little surface area I could work on. It was great for taking off a bit of rust off the roof of our boat though.

It looks like the jobs done and the video's not finished - this would have been checking out if it wasn't ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5iXZ4yLpNuDi8U ). Thick paint on top of a rust converter looks sensible - they don't work half as well as they first appear to.

Perhaps! Opted for a natural brush with it being an oil based paint.

Ah... I'm not sure about that! Better to remove as much as give it the best chance possible. Plus, there was a log of bubbling and wanted a smooth job overall.

Sorry, but this video is like a lot of KZbin offerings from the U.S A. Like our U.S. posts, you use a sledgehammer to crack a but. No need for eye protection, No need for ear protection, No need for a dust mask, No need for knee pads, No need for electric tools. At least you went for a good paintbrush .Tip( wind an elastic band midway on the bristles to reduce the amount of paint getting up to the ferrule which makes brush cleaning easier). So you use £1,000 of equipment and consumables to do a £20 task. I have done similar, but taken longer for a lot less. Hammerite is overpriced shite. I used broken hacksaw blades to remove every tiny bit of paint ; without gouging metal , which leaves deep marks. Minimal or no dust is made and the finish is good for paint.
