Hullo Lana, I have used watercolor paper for practice, since Pastel papers are so expensive! I will say it never occurred to me to start with regular watercolors as an under-painting. I am always filling the tooth of the paper and resorting to a workable fixative to get more layers! I have even tried making my own practice papers starting with watercolor paper adding pumice or clear gesso! I must say this is a wonderful wave painting! Yes, even close up! Thank you for continuing to bring us amazing videos.

Thanks Pete! I’m glad you liked the demo. Yes, watercolor is basically an underpainting here, and once you get the background color you want in each area, the right values, it’s easier to “fight” the texture 😁

amazing that you get the pastel to work on just the watercolour paper - I often do a watercolour underpainting on white AS Colourfix paper with pastels on top - I didn't think the pastels would stick on the watercolour paper

Thanks Kathy! I worked on different surfaces. Usually it’s for color studies, when I just want something inexpensive, often even rather smooth. I still can get away with a few layers 😁

I use watercolor paper exclusively. I simply can't afford those pricey sanded papers. I tone it with acrylic paint. Then I coat it with clear gesso. Watercolor paper really takes a beating... if your painting is a fail you can just scrub it off under a tap, dry and start again. Make sure you use top quality paper ie: Arches or Fabriano.

Thanks for sharing this! I think it's the texture of the cold press watercolor paper that is a bit too rough for me. Maybe a bit smoother and with the clear gesso would do that, I still would like to have the ability to make some of those more crisp marks. Question - the quality watercolor paper is also not cheap, does that still come out less expensive than sanded paper? I did not explore that yet really, but I do love the sanded papers.

@@LanaBallot Hi Lana! Funny, I just ordered some hot press watercolor paper to experiment on and also some pumice to make it extra gritty! I usually use Fabriano Artistico which is about $8 for a 22x30 sheet. So I can get 6 8x10s out of that. I've never used sanded paper but I do want to try it. I'm just afraid I'll like it too much! BTW, I'm not primarily a pastel person, more of an oil painter. And thank you for your wonderful videos--especially those tackling the challenges of greens! Ugh! Many thanks!

It looks like it's a Terry Ludwig, a darker Ultramarine, but I cannot tell you exactly which one. I hope this helps.
