Hi Louise, just wanted to sayI loved this video! So helpful and it really hits home because I have recently painted a very red dahlia so you have taught me to keep going with red in layers to get the right tone. Also I have separately painted some gum leaves and a dried banksia cone which had some interesting shadows which I painted too dark. In addition I tried painting the shadow at the same time as the leaves. By doing it after the object is finished makes it clearer to get the correct shape 💃 I am going to try again! Thank you

So useful to see the exact dilution of pigment you use for the initial shadow mix. I always end up doing lots of tests off to the side to get it right(ish). I think that shadows are so stressful because they can so easily ruin a piece that was going really well for ages! And sometimes you have to move your brain from intricate/delicate mode (painting the object) to a looser/charging style. However much I plan, shadows always seem to require a bit of courage- get in there, hope you get the tone right, get out and cross your fingers it dries right!

Louise~ I love your work and your tutorials so much! I haven't started painting just yet - I'm waiting for some materials to arrive. Meanwhile, I have been watching sooo many of your videos, here and on SkillShare. I have always wanted to learn painting, and I am so excited! Anyway, I appreciate your time and efforts! 💜
