Echoes of the candyland game board, velvet & silk ribbons? A circus or county fair from a drone? Plastic inflatables at a summer pool party?
A 3 minute speed-thru of a 2 hour drawing & painting session.
So what's going on here? I had this idea of building a grid with colorful imaginary objects "behind" the lines. I think I met my goal of making a different graphic pattern in each individual cell/section. Thinking about looking through, ahead, underneath (i.e. a gate, a window with mullions, scaffolding, wire fence, sewer grate, glass floor, walkway).
I'm all about the creative process, not about perfect results (ツ) and that said, I do a lot of experimentation in my art. Sometimes I paint a grid free-hand (as in this video) and sometimes I start by tape-masking the grid* first. I like both methods for different reasons. They look & feel different. The process is different. It depends what you are trying to accomplish.
This free-form process is a great challenge, fantastic brush practice {notice those zillion corners), and I find this kind of painting very calming.
*Masking (tape, frisket, masking fluid, etc) allows more precise results and also lets you map out white/bright areas. For a grid, a tape mask allows "boxes" to have crisper edges plus it takes less time to paint.
To make this page, I drew impromptu shapes "behind" a pencil-drawn grid. I like to work on several ideas at the same time and build in some form of practice (i.e. something I want to get better at or better understand).
Enjoy the video, relax, take a deep breath. 🌞

#6 round is my brush best friend. I really like this grid idea. I may have to try it out in a sketchbook.

Love this idea. I do doodles in grids but don’t paint them like this. I’m ordered a round 6 brush and giving it a try! I need the brush practice. I always find you so inspiring - thank you for sharing

I would still LOVE to have you tell your story - how you went from the corporate world to becoming a fabulous artist.

Barbara, It's sweet of you to ask. I never really know how to answer -- basically I started drawing and kept adding different kinds of art to the rotation -- and never stopped 😊 Let me know if there is a particular aspect you're curious about!

@@DaisyYellowArt I’ve heard you say that you started doodling while waiting for your kids to get out of school, etc. I’d just love to hear about the gradual evolution of your skills. What materials did you start out with? How did your practice develop?

@@barbaracimini1447 That helps a lot! I don't think I put it all in one place ever, so I'll mark that down as a blog post topic. Thank you! tg
