Thank you so much for this KZbin video. I'm also doing your self directed video on Fall trees. It's a challenge to get that glow, but you explain it so well. Looking forward to practicing what I learned!

This is a really useful tutorial, Lana, thank you! I am just starting out with pastels and find it to be a fascinating medium. It is great to see how you sculpt the painting and never blend the colors with your finger. I will be learning a lot from your tutorials.

Hello I am new to soft pastels... What kind of papers are suitable for them? Love your videos so much ❤️
@LanaBallot10 ай бұрын
Welcome to pastels! There are two main types of papers for pastels - non sanded (less expensive, good for learning, studies, sketches) and special sanded papers (great for multiple layers of color). Some examples of good ones for each type: non sanded - Canson, sanded - UART. You'll need to try some to understand the difference and what you like.

I like the look of using the charcoal pencil; may I ask, what color charcoal is that? Also, is there a certain softness (number?) that you used. I found this video very help. Thank you for sharing it with us.
@LanaBallot Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'd use a soft charcoal pencil, but I might have had only medium during the video, not sure. I also have a black pastel pencil so that would work as well for that linear work.

Okay, thank you. I do have a couple of soft charcoal pencils, all different shades of gray-brown-black and also pastel pencil. I find that black is too harsh, just sticks out too much. I'm really learning a lot from these videos. Thank you. I have been painting in pastel for 3 years now, but I seem to have gotten into a slump. I have not painted anything I like in a while now.@@LanaBallot

@@reneekroyer5104 I'm glad the videos help 😊 I hope you continue painting even if you get discouraged by the results for sometime. Also try to figure out what exactly you don't like in a failed work, something specific, that helps to improve in those areas.

Yes, I will keep trying I've spent too much time on pastels to give it up. lol I think a lot of time, I paint from photos, and I have an idea in my head what I want it to look like, but fail to make it. I think I try to put in too much detail. I'm learning, slowly. I need to simplify things but I love detail, yet I love impressionistic work, so it is a mystery to me. lol@@LanaBallot
