Greetings from North Carolina in the USA. Every time I watch one of these videos, I pick up something that I use and I can say, my paintings continue to improve. You are the best artist I follow, by far! My goal is to be half as good as you and I will be very happy!

The rigging is a sod to do on canvas. The dimples in the canvas don't help, too much and of course even when I thin the paint down I still screw up. Mike I noticed that you don't ever use canvas but a smooth piece of hardboard, painted over with gesso. You call em "panels" I would think the paint does flow more readily, more easily on a smooth surface. And of course you use "Liquin fine detail" to help the paint flow better. A while back I had the job of "rigging" two paddle steamers moored along side, on the Mississippi. Lots of small details and it took me forever. I used canvas. Really I suspect it would have been better to use a smoother surface, like your panels. Anyway I tried the rigger brush and it wasn't OK. There was far too many lines to do. So eventually I found a Sharpie pen with a tiny tip, about 0.2 mm in diameter. So I used that and a straight edge. That was OK, but then the ink was too black. Because it was waterproof ink I simply painted over the line I'd just drawn to tone down the black to a suitable grey colour. That worked fine for straight lines, but then I had the job of very long slow curved lines, and that meant I could not use the "straight edge" Eventually I used pencil to mark out the actual curve on a stiff piece of card. I then got my scissors and cut along the curve to produce a template. I then positioned the template in exactly the right spot and used my pen to draw the curve. It worked like a charm. Then all I needed to do was to tone down the very black ink with paint. I spent ages on that painting and it eventually sold at auction here in Thailand for 4,000 Baht, that's about 100 Pounds. I should have set a higher reserve. But never mind. You live and learn. I won't make that mistake again. Make sure you set a decent amount of money for the "reserve price" at auction. Kind regards to all - Chris in Thailand - and of course Happy Christmas !!!

Those are good tricks to making lines. Another good one to know is to paint in a line way too thick at first and then paint over the edge of the line with another color and slowly thin the line down and shape it until it's the way you want it. Another one, whatever color you want the line to be make that the lower layer of the acrylic underpainting. When that's dry paint over that with oils, and then scrape in the lines with a palette knife or the end of the brush handle, leaving a line of the underpainting showing up. Can even use a needle. Works great for really thin lines, like a cat's whiskers or something.

@@RobertF- What a good idea Robert. Thanks for that. Funny thing is this week I've painted a beautiful black cat with two budgies sitting on it. I've more or less completed the painting except for ........ Yes the cat's white whiskers Getting white titanium paint to look really white when it's over black is virtually impossible. Normally I'd leave the white canvas alone and not paint it. Now I'm going to paint the whiskers using white gesso and then paint the gesso with titanium white. It might work. I'll know later today if it does Kind regards - Chris in Thailand go2ssff@gmail.com

i would be so scared to try to put the masts and rigging in after it looked that good.....lol
@RobertF-3 жыл бұрын
If you want to do that in the safest way possible, wait until the lower layer is dry completely. That way when you put in the masts and rigging, if you have to make any changes or corrections you can wipe it off. Otherwise you have to just be brave and put it in and leave it or just paint over it and make corrections if you really have to. Don't be scared though, it's just paint.
