Painting Sunset Sky With Pastels tutorial

This is a full recording of my demo on Painting a Sunset Sky with pastels - how to create glowing sunset colors and the feeling of depth in the sky, how to mix (layer) colors in pastels to keep then luminous.
The work is done on UART sanded paper using the wet Underpainting technique.

Very dramatic painting. Definitely an improvement over the reference photo. Enjoy the narrative that gives us insight into your thought process. When you chuckled at Moody Blues were you thinking of the band? I’d think your favorite band from that era would be Deep Purple 😄

How can you layer so many colors without using a fixative! I thought layering wam over cool made mud....you can see that I am a beginning artist! What kind of pastels do you use? You probably mentioned it, but I am having problems understanding your speech... Is there anybody who can help you ? Thanks for sharing your beautiful work!

Thanks for your questions Dee! I’m not aware of cool and warm colors making mud, but mixing up the very different values will do that. I’m making a video about the pastels I use, different brands, it would be hard and probably pointless to just mention them all here. As far as my English, sorry I cannot help it. It’s not my native language. Maybe you can use those captions on KZbin. On the other hand, I have been teaching for years, in classroom and online, my students can understand me just fine. Sorry, I cannot speak perfect English and I don’t have any budget for hiring someone to do voice overs, which would not be my choice anyway. I hope people still get enough value from watching my process even when they have some problems with my accent. Enjoy painting with pastels, it’s such a wonderful medium!
