I think what blows me away the most how strong the contrast is between the super dark background and basically white highlights in the metal but somehow none of the textures in the painting seem overwhelming or out of place. I also usually paint super thin because I don't like having a big glop of paint on a small brush so I'm gonna try that bamboo stick method!

There's not a single art book on drawing/painting in layers (trust me, I've really, really looked). Some things I just have trouble learning without direct instruction. The first artist to write it is practically guaranteed a best seller.
