I really enjoy your videos and they’ve been a huge help! A suggestion for a future video would be to see how to set up your palette for a painting session. Do you use a wet palette?
@MattsHobbyHour Жыл бұрын
That's a great suggestion! I use a wet palette for most things. For contrast paint and washes I use a plastic palette that has wells in it. I'll try to include some more footage of my palettes in upcoming videos. Thanks!

Honestly love your tutorials, you make things feel not so daunting! Quick question, if I wanted to make a carapace with a Black/Blue tint Contrast effect similar to your Kraken carapace, what paints would you use? Thanks!
@MattsHobbyHour11 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! I think a mix of Ultramarines Blue and a small amount of Black Templar would make a good basecoat. Then highlight with the lighter blues of your choice, depending on what kind of shade you're after. Russ Grey highlights would give you a blue-grey effect. Or you could go a more vibrant route with something like Caledor Sky. Good luck! (I have an ice themed tyranid tutorial on the way; the scales are blue but much lighter than the Kraken example. Maybe it will be helpful to you. Stay tuned!)

Great tutorial. I will paint my tyranids like this the next days. looking forward to the first prototype in this scheme. Just wondering, why no spot pattern on the arms, like kraken?
@MattsHobbyHour3 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! I didn't include the spot pattern for a couple reasons: I didn't want the tutorial to become too complicated, and also I don't really like the look of the spot pattern. But that's cool if you like it! Nothing stopping you from adding some freehand. Feel free to share your results on Instagram or Discord, I'd love to see them. Good luck and happy painting!

Hi! I've been using a modified version of this scheme for a few months now and was wondering, why not paint the carapace first? you can't really correct mistakes once you've contrasted the skin and carefully painting out the edges of red to avoid it takes me ages
@MattsHobbyHour2 ай бұрын
thanks for watching the videos! You could absolutely change the order you paint things, if you prefer. I weighed a few options before deciding on the order of things, and there are downsides to both ways. On the troops I prefer drybrushing highlights on the skin, which saves a lot of time, and I couldn't do that if the scales were already painted. You're right though, there is always a chance to splash some red on the skin when painting the carapace, and touching it up with Bonewhite can be time consuming. I chose to paint the skin first because I think the amount of time saved by drybrushing (and being a little sloppy with the Skeleton Horde layer) makes up for any time "lost" by having to carefully paint the scales after. But if you work more efficiently the other way around, then I'd say go for it! Hope this explains my thought process! If you have any thoughts or improvements to the scheme I'm always open to hearing them. Feel free to reach out on Discord or Instagram. Good luck!
@dossantosenzo50828 ай бұрын
hey, I am relatively new to these painting technics and I don't fully understand your mixing. For example, what 1:1 and 3:1 mean ? are we talking about the quantity of each colors ? and how do you mix them too ? you put a bit of water in your two colors and then mix them ? thank you !
@MattsHobbyHour8 ай бұрын
Hello and thanks for watching! Those numbers mean the quantity/ratio of each color. So 3:1 means 3 parts of the first color and 1 part of the second color. You could measure it by brushfuls (or drops, if you transferred your paint to a dropper bottle). I mix the paints with an old brush in a plastic well palette. I don't add any water to the mix unless its specified in the video. I have tried to include footage of mixing the colors in my newer videos. Give those a watch if you can and hopefully it will help out. Good luck!

How many hours did it take you to finish painting your master peace? Great painting. Also what size of brush do you use to paint the thin line?
@MattsHobbyHour Жыл бұрын
This took me about two days. I think I could have had it finished in one but filming adds a lot of time to the process. I used sizes 1 and 0 sable brushes for most of the detail work. Series 99 from Rosemary and Co. Thanks for watching!

Amazing job. How long did it take to paint ?

Thanks! I painted this over the course of 2 or 3 days. Filming the process adds a lot of time though, so it would have been faster otherwise.

Could i use grim black from army painter instead of black templar for the scales ?
@MattsHobbyHour Жыл бұрын
I bet you could, but I'm not sure what ratio you would need. I would recommend mixing a small amount on your palette and test it out first. If it looks good, go for it! Good luck!

Awesome job on the tutorials, I love your painting style. One suggestion - that guitar track in the background is way too repetitive, it gets irritating and entrancing at the same time somehow. I would suggest trying something different to replace it.
@MattsHobbyHour Жыл бұрын
thanks for your suggestion! I agree about the music. Part of me wants no music at all, but I guess there needs to be something. Ideally i'd like to have it quiet and unobtrusive. I will have to look at other free use tracks and mix it up a bit.

@@MattsHobbyHourOne thing I'd like to ask btw, is there a way to make the claws look sharper?
@MattsHobbyHour8 ай бұрын
@@Zillawill do you mean physically carve the claws to make them sharper? Or are you asking how to make the lines/brush marks look sharper? If it's the former, I would use files during the assembly stage. For the latter, it's all about having a steady hand and a really fine brush. Not much else to it! Good luck!
