Painting wood to look like other wood was actually a super common thing called wood graining or faux bois and definitely shows the history of your home! There is a brief NYTimes article on it if your interested in the details. I have a family member who has a historic home and this is something they actually added back into their home to make it feel more period appropriate.

I feel like i've seen some furniture that has some more "premium" wood grain (or burl or whatever) painted on. It's so fun to find! And i agree it makes for a charming period detail without the expense of fine wood.

Escape to the dream chateau KZbin channel just did a whole room in faux wood paneling and it looks gorgeous. If you decide to go in that direction you can look at what they did to create the finished look. Personally I hope you decide to stripe/sand back the paint to reveal the hard wood coloring underneath and then stain the wood. There is nothing that beats the real wood finish but if the doors aren’t in the best shape or different types of wood then faux painting may have to be the next best solution. From the looks of it, it appears all the doors are the same style and look original which is definitely a win.

When I lived and worked in the Historic area of Savannah, GA many years ago, I knew an expert in faux wood and marble finishes. He was a Scotsman who, coincidentally, was mentioned by name in the famous (infamous?) book "Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil" that swept Savannah into a new era of tourism. He had been trained classically to use traditional tools (like a single feather) to paint the veins in faux marble to the point it was indistinguishable from the real stone unless you touched the surface and found that it wasn't cold. He was also amazingly skilled at using gold leaf. It was fascinating to watch him work. As you can imagine, his services were really sought after with all of the amazing historic buildings in the city and even did some free lance work in the local museum restoration. Lovely person as well.

Beat me to it! Faux bois is so much fun in older homes, if a bit annoying to restore since it takes a talented artist to do it convincingly. A couple restoring an old mansion in Danville, VA had an artist add a lot of it back into their house. It’s the Sublett-Miller House Restoration!

Hi! As others have mentioned, the faux bois on your doors is historically accurate for your home. And it's actually kind of interesting...sometimes people who had a lot of money would use this technique to make oak look like mahogany, but make it still obvious that it was faux bois because it showed that they had the money to have someone do that. A lot of the doors in Thomas Jefferson's Monticello fall into that category. But you have a farm house, and I suspect that the faux bois was done because the doors were a cheap pine or some other sort of wood that doesn't look very good when stained. I've seen several people try to strip paint off doors in homes in the same general time period and original economic bracket as yours, and the wood has ended up being very far from stain grade, so they ended up repainting them or replacing them.

Yes! I came to the comments to say just that - our farm house is as old as Ariel's, and we stripped the paint of one door, it was a pain in the *ss, and it's cheap, soft pine with a lot of knots, doesn't even look that good...

Here in Scotland, we can just phone guys who come and take the doors and dip them in a tank to remove all th3 paint , worked wonderfully on my large Victorian doors and wasn’t too expensive, and no labour in!❤️

The faux wood grain on the doors might actually be original to the house. It was pretty common back in the day to use cheaper wood and then faux paint it to look like more expensive wood.

I spent weeks envisioning having a similar Gothic window in my own Home after I first saw yours. It is such a glorious design element. I, too, am a young woman Homeowner with a preference for Antiquated and Vintage aesthetics. Yet, I am also legally disabled, so purchasing a Home that was so old it required much overhauling would not have been prudent. I therefore bought a 1940s Colonial Revival architectural style Home that is in excellent shape. Painting, adding wallpapers, and perusing as many Vintage and Antiques via Marketplace and local shops as I can is deeply satisfying. As is watching you make progress in your abode, Ariel. 🖤

Those doors may have been painted by an itinerant painter in the 1800s. That was a popular interior decorating technique in past centuries. I’m sure it adds character and I would keep them, if possible try to duplicate it on the other doors, or just refinish them in the same color stain. Your hallway is coming along nicely. I wish I had a beautiful old Victorian like yours to restore and furnish. You’re doing a wonderful job! I always look forward to the next video.

As many others have stated, I absolutely ADORE the small check ins. While a big video can be really fun having these more regular updates feels like catching up with that one cool friend you have who is always doing something interesting. It also gives me cool ideas and makes these bigger projects feel more *realistic* for someone who gets overwhelmed easily. Makes me feel like "hey! I could do that too, i SHOULD do that". I think painting the doors is still a valid option! If you want to have the whole landing finished by the end of the year and doing full door restorations doesn’t fit within that you should totally paint them to match the wallpaper. You can always restore them later. Since they’re already so made-over one more layer of paint won’t make it significantly more difficult to restore them. Take care~ 💕

my 1883 home also has the faux wood grain over a painted surface, over a solid wood door. I thought they had been redone until I saw the chipped edges that revealed the layers.

Scraping paint like that is one of life's pure pleasures (to me). I had a job at a place where one of the cheese display coolers had never had the protective film peeled off and I was SO EXCITED when we had a summer lull and I had uninterrupted, customer-free hours to just PEEL to my heart's content.

I honestly like the white paint on the doors, it kind of breaks up the muted colors (which I do love on the wallpaper and the pretty green paint!) without standing out too much and looks very cute and cozy. If sanding them down isn't an option painting them all white or a less bright white could still complement the space and accent the other colors really well without taking away from it. But definitely do what feels best because you live in the space, and I think it is very different being in the space as opposed to just seeing it online so you know better than us lol!

Fun Fact: My wife and I learned, while watching the short-lived "Cheap Old Houses" show that faux graining was actually a very common practice especially in Victorian and late Victorian times. Craftspeople would paint cheaper woods to make them look like they had the grains of more expensive woods. Not saying it's a bad idea to get the doors down to the original wood but something to consider from a historical perspective. Either way love love love the content!

you could take the short cut and do a faux wood similar to the other doors on the white door - so you have the best of two options, it is fun to do (takes a bit patience to get it "right") and it will be entertaining to learn and watch :) . you need a painted base for the wood painting so you dont have to remove the white. chose a undertone that is a bit lighter than the other doors, the painted wood grain will add the "rest" of tone to the overall appearance. you could work with different brushes, or if you like with more specialised tools like rubber stamps, combs etc. maybe you find some good tutorials to watch while recovering! all the best wishes

I just love that reading nook and window! So beautiful, and I love what you’ve done with it, so far! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I think it wd look very cohesive to paint the white door green to match the rest of the trim; and leave the wood-grained doors as they are. Of course, I can’t see them up close, to determine the condition, but they look really pretty from a distance, and I don’t think anyone is going to say, “Oh, my! One of her doors is a different color than the others! 😱” Rather, they will appreciate it as the character of an antique home. This, rather than introducing another trim color for the doors. I love the green you used; it’s so pretty and soothing! As we quilters (textile artists) like to say, “Finished is better than perfect!” You must take into account your health issues and limited amount of energy. Ask yourself, “Is the end result going to be worth all the energy and work involved to get it there? Or can I be satisfied with the alternative?” The 80/20 rule may come into play here. Will it take 80% more effort to get the last 20% of the result? Or will 20% more effort increase the result by 80%? (I think that’s how it goes.) Modesty means recognizing your limitations, and focusing your time, effort, and attention on the most important things. Only you can decide what’s right for you. I agree with the others, that if you do decide to strip any of the doors, start w the white one. Bc then if you change your mind or don’t like what you find, you can always just repaint it, and won’t have messed up the other faux wood painted doors. 🤗 PS: Your home needs some quilts! It wd look awesome to have a patchwork quilt on your reading nook bench, along with some coordinating throw pillows. You can often find some beautiful old quilts at estate sales, auctions, antique shops, and even at garage sales by ppl who don’t appreciate the value and handwork that went into creating such a work of art. You cd even take a quilting class, or watch some videos here on KZbin. I bet you’d love it! ☺️

Sooooo happy you decided to paint the entire window woodwork in the green. It looks so classy! The diminutive lamp shades are adorable; they were a real score! I agree with most of your followers: natural wood doors will be beautiful, and the ONLY other 'color' you should add to the hallway. One thought I have regarding that: initially strip the paint from a small, lower section of white door, in order to see what kind of wood you actually have. Hopefully all the doors are the same wood, because it will be difficult to achieve a cohesive stain and finish on differing woods. Maybe do a test strip on all the doors to be sure. If they are different wood, it will be much easier to just paint them all. Fingers crossed they're all the same. Also, buy some scraps of the same wood as the doors so you can paint swatches of various finishes to see what stain color and finish (shiny, satin, or matte (waxed) that you like. Don't let the project overwhelm you. Once you've made your choice, just do one or two doors at a time and work your way down the hall. Nothing has to be done in a hurry. The process is part of the outcome. Enjoy!!!! Hope you get well soon and feel better!!!

Sorry about the cold, they’re no fun at all. I don’t know about your door, but the painted wood grain was quite the fad in late 1800’s I have a faux bois dresser. If the painted grain door is of that era you might want to keep it.

I thought that some of the doors were the natural wood. That is a lot of work and is better done in the summer. I can totally understand if you just paint them beige. And then you can restore the doors at your leisure 🥰

A company called Florida Paints makes a product called Plexiflex. It is like Bondo for wood. When it dries out partially, you can make snakes for window glazing. Use an old credit card to remove excess. This product flexes for land, heat, ad cold movement and stays for a long time.
