Great builds and always good to watch, don’t always believe what you read on spray cans those one coat solutions don’t always work out. my advice is always use a good etch primer on bear metal it’s more steps but it lasts longer against rust and is far more durable in the long term and helps with a good finish. keep up the good work 👍
@BIGWIGGLE223
@BIGWIGGLE223 5 жыл бұрын
I second this recommendation. Once you've used a true metal etching primer you'll never go back to the general purpose primer. Just be careful with that stuff on plastics. It'll turn it into a pile of steamy goo.

1- use good automotive primer, I use duplicolor. 2- light sand the primer 3- use whatever paint you want, I prefer regular rustoleum, its hella tough. 4- use 2k clear coat, not 2x! Eastwood and spraymax are good 2k's. This is since you love the cans so much...

I have commented on this twice in 2 separate videos. His little air cooled VW style oil slinger contraption isn't going to do a thing. He needs to find a way to install seals and pack it with grease. Its gonna fill up with sand, mud and all kinds of stuff, especially the first time he sinks the axle below water. All that work will be toast. He did and awesome job everywhere else, but his rear axles are full of fail.

From the shine on the metal underneath, I would put some of the blame on prep. A good acid etch primer would have helped. Soap, water and Scotch Brite pads followed by immediate drying off would have done wonders.

I watched this when the videos were coming out, but I had one of the videos from the series pop up as a suggestion yesterday, so I rewatched them. Now that it's been a while and a half, I now had suggestions. Wheel alignment for sure, maybe an electric wench that drives a chain and sprocket that spins on the outside of what you already have connected to the drive shaft, on a free spot on the chain. And maybe some optional flip out/down mirrors. The reverse would just be on a push button that only works with the motor in neutral or requires the clutch to be fully pressed when you press the button. But that's all in the past now. Oh well. Lol

@calholli 5 жыл бұрын
You should have put your rear shaft in the opposite direction in that hub.. (unless it can only go one way) .... and that is because, the direction that your chain is pulling, it will always be trying to loosen that center bolt that holds it on... Granted you did use a lot of red locktite... but If you flipped it around the other direction, it would always be trying to tighten the bolt.

You need a metal etching primer. It'll actually bite into steel chemically and that sh#$ don't come off. And its also too hot for plastics. Ask me how I know. Lol. A few good painting tips: 1. when you're spraying silver paints that are "supposed" to look like a chrome finish is to lay down a super smooth coat of gloss black first. The smoother you can get the black, the more it'll look like chrome. Of course, it'll never look 100% chrome, but it'll get you to about 70% or so. 2. Your first coat should absolutely just be a light dusting. What this does is give the following heavier coats of paint something to grab ahold of and not "slide" away from the surface. This is how we get runs in the paint. This applies to every step of painting: primer, color and especially clear coat. 3. It's all about the perameters. Don't paint if it's raining unless you are hanging it to dry in a temperature controlled area. I'll use my heat gun and warm the material up before hitting it with paint and then hit it again with the heat gun about an hour after I've sprayed the final coat. Don't do it while it's still freshly wet. You'll blow more dust into your paint than if you used a sandblaster. 5. If you have parts masked off, remove the masking while it's still wet. That'll help your paint lines stay nice and super crispy. 6. I start out wet sanding clear coat at 1000 grit and I use dish soap with my water. It'll help lift material up and away from the paint and keep the sandpaper unclogged. 7. Depending on what you're painting, all these steps may not be necessary. For the buggy build, I would've just primered, and laid down about 3 coats of color. Maybe a single coat of clear, but I wouldn't have worried about runs as much. Hell, I probably just would've sprayed it a flat color and been done with it. She looks good though. You did an excellent job on this one!!
