I began drawing as a child because I wanted to draw trees. I can draw trees well and to my great satisfaction but alas! I have struggled for countless years to paint trees until I feel ah yes!!! That is a beautiful tree! With these videos of yours I finally feel happy painting. I absolutely love the attention and care you give to understanding trees before even painting them! After watching these tree videos in particular and giving them a go, I am telling you I I have finally received the information I need to proceed confidently toward painting trees I like. I’m not there yet but after so many frustrating years, you have given me a most precious gift: being able to paint my favorite part of nature: trees. Thank you very very much for your approach to painting and teaching watercolors. Your paintings are beyond beautiful and take my breath away.

I couldn't wait for you to address my personal kryptonite: The Summer Grove. I live in Northern Ontario (Canada) and I'm surrounded by wonderful woodlands, trails and streams that would be perfect for a landscape but for the fact that they are spoiled by impenetrable walls of green! Rather than deal with yet another 'greenscape', I went to sea for the summer! Thanks to your instruction, I will revisit some of my earlier seasonal failures and try again with some artistic pruning and the techniques you described so well. One item that I found extremely useful is your use of side of the rigger. I had been using a larger brush for the trunk or heavier branches, but your side-on rigger creates a much more interesting trunk shape with no need to reach for a larger round brush. Thank you for your help!

You are in fact very good at these videos Oliver. They are superb. I think the conversation about colours can cause people to obsess over particular hues when in fact the important thing is the tone within the given colour. You could do this in red and blue and it would still look like a tree if the tones are right. Your videos have helped me immensely thank you very much.

Thanks for another great video. I appreciate that you explain the reasons for your choices. For example, ‘this is a warmer color because it’s the sunlight side’. That seems an obvious statement when it’s written down, but in the heat of the moment, trying to paint, sometimes the mind goes blank! I am not a stickler for exact color names because those Chan vary from brand to brand, as does the exact shade even if the same pigment is used. What helps me more is knowing if you are getting a warm or cool version of the color, so I can readily match to my palette- and I think you naturally do this.

When you were saying about people asking about what colours you use, I was thinking the same. Maybe just saying the colour as you get it out to mix - no explaining what your doing, just sometimes saying the colour. An oil painter I follow does this, so that’s where I got the idea from. You did it once or twice in this video, something like: I putting some shadow in now… ultramarine and cadmium red … But equally, not necessary either! I have learnt more than I ever have through your videos about a medium I have loved since I was 5 or 6 but never got the hang of. Love your approach and step by step explanation.
