Painting Warhammer like it's 1994. Looking back at Second Edition Warhammer 40,000 and the retro paint set of the mid 90s. I paint an Ultramarine Space Marine, a Warhammer Fantasy Chaos Warrior and an Eldar Guardian. Using basic painting techniques, this video is ideal for beginners looking to get into the world of Warhammer.

Mine wasn't straight from GW technically, it was a box of Space Crusade my parents bought me for Christmas as 'my thing' (Dad owned Heroquest and he did all the painting on it etc.) featuring those classic pushfit monopose marines like the one featured here, the old Chaos Dreadnought (which I wish would get an updated kit even if it's just a nostalgia bait one) and so on.

3rd edition Eldar was my introduction to Warhammer. Seeing the beauty of these models makes me want to paint my current models in a more 90's nostalgia. Something that will pop on the field and just bring out the joy of what can be a bit of an over serious game. Thank you so much for the video!

i didn't get into 40k until i was like 20. right about when 5th edition was hitting the store. I always feel like I missed out when I see how the hobby used to look. the models are objectively way better now, but I wish I had the experience of caking thick vibrant paints onto low detail figures and then setting up these wacky looking battles with my siblings and friends. back when the lore was being roughly pieced together, and when the only place you could find 40k anything 40k was the shop. anyone who grew up with that, I hope you appreciate it

Micro Sol and Micro Set were absolutely available in the '90s. It's possible that I still have a bottle or two from that era (though I wouldn't be surprised to see the fluid all gone through the sides of the plastic bottle. If I were to guess, I suspect the sweet smell is propylene glycol, which is most commonly seen in non-toxic antifreeze and is also often used as a thinner in acrylic paints.

I think those Guardians were the first minis I painted as my own ones. It was also my first experience with the dreaded Metal-Plastic Hybrid mini with the optional Catapults, though in fairness the Guardians are one of the tamer ones of that sort. Still have them and a small army of 2nd ed eldar stuff to be salvaged someday.... I "converted" one of those Chaos Warriors for use as a Chaos Lord. IE I glued a Plasma Pistol onto it. The fact he was extremely short even beside 2002 era Marines is probably why he was so angry.... Plan to convert him into a Master of Executions or something similar. Cos, y'know, why should the Leagues hog all the angry shortarse energy?

Is that the striking scorpion rune on the guardian's helmet? Got too many Eldar in my pile of shame (almost all 1st ed models, squads of all aspects, exarchs and phoenix lords, the original two boxes of harlequins, the jetbikes, the harlequin jetbike with the huge face, the 1st-ed war walker and dreadnaught, and the original avatar - the little one with the spear). I think videos like these should make many enthusiasts happy. The painting guys show you grand schemes of light, shadow, and how to make the perfect metal gleam on a back pack after 100 layers of paint - and there we have 90s vintage models in their simplistic yet enjoyable colors. Just shows you don’t have to treat all your models like a Golden Demon entry, and you can be happy with just a basic scheme and an enjoyable paint session.
