Not mentioned (unless I missed it) linseed oil gives the wood important breathability, so it won't rot.

Helpful step-by-step instructions, thank you! I'm curious why turpentine is used in the primer. I haven't seen that included before. Does it perform any special purpose, or can that be skipped?

I am searching but not finding; * is it best to prime and apply one universal undercoat on steel and timber window frames before applying putty * how long must the putty in steel and wood frames be left to 'cure before it can be painted over? * what type of paint is applied directly onto putty

the putty i bought had instructions on the tub, it said to paint the putty more than 2 weeks after glazing, but less than 4 weeks after

While I would agree from an aesthetic point of view linseed oil paint is suitable for metal too

Once you find yourself in the next century ...think about applying a second coat of paint
