Painting Winslow Homer's Stormy Seas at Prouts Neck, Maine with David Dunlop .
We would love your to SUBSCRIBE to our Channel!
David and his producing partner Connie Simmons were filming several programs at Prout's Neck, ME, the last home of Winslow Homer, for our new DVD, Painting the Sea. It was the last day of our trip, Connie had packed away our second camera, and we were walking back to the car to leave. We spotted this very evocative place on the rocks in front of Winslow Homer's studio. David really wanted to try to paint a quick oil sketch to catch the mood, but they were very nervous because it was really too foggy and wet to shoot and we only had one camera. But - as always - David prevailed and we shot this very quick oil sketch. It really was too foggy and wet, we didn't have the camera for close-ups as we usually do, but we shot it anyway for fun! So please forgive the blur on the camera lens - we ran out of there as soon as David finished to protect our camera - and we should have left sooner!

HI, I am dipping my brush into refined linseed oil. I rarely ever use turpentine when oil painting..no need. This means you can paint in oil without the toxic effects of turpentine fumes. Best, David

David, When I first started watching you on PBS, I was amazed, at how you could use just one brush and paper towels and create a work of art. The way you include history and techniques is just icing on the cake. Ive learned so much from your techniques, I can watch a video over and over and still learn something new each time.

I haven't read all 70+ comments so i might be repeating...but, I think you can substitute Burnt Sienna for the Iron Oxide. He refers to the open side and the closed side. The open side refers to the soft blended edge of the white paint that depicts the foam. The closed side refers to the sharp, hard edge where the white touches the rock. This is a very wonderful video. It all came together the moment he tore off the tape! If you measure the dimensions of the taped area correctly, you can create a painting that will fit perfectly into a standard Mat size. I must say, I rather liked what was created on the palette, too!

I kept waiting for the ocean to rise up, and sweep you off the rocks. If I were there, I would have painted the lunatic artist, painting the angry sea. I'm sure you must have had people walking by thinking, what is this guy doing? Anything for art.

I see that David hasn't replied, so I will take a stab at an answer: He has taped or somehow affixed the paper that he is using as a palette onto the right half of a long board. ( There is disposable palette paper that you can buy, use and throw away ) My guess is that he is painting on canvas paper taped to the same board. You can buy canvas paper by the pad. Or perhaps he is just painting on a piece of regular canvas that he has gesso'd.
