I've used this paint gun to spray several parts on modern cars because they are small now a days, unlike classic American cars...each fender & door was the size of a table, & hoods the size of a king size mattress. Since I'm not a "professional," the cheap harbor freight paint gun has worked great on the once in a while Asian car panel that I have to pain. I yes, the result is great. Obviously the spray gun is cheaply made. You shake it and you can hear every part rattle, especially the trigger.

It’s long retired now, but for $16 ($12 with the coupon when available) you won’t find anything better in said price range, guarantee you that much. You are correct about the gun needing to be cranked way up, which is annoying. However if you use it a couple times for random projects, it’s not bad. If you are new to spraying, you could easily learn on it without breaking the bank, but eventually I’d upgrade to something more quality.

I've never sprayed 2K, so I don't know it's spraying characteristics, but for lacquer, this gun has been incredibly good to me. There are some little tricks I've had to learn, but for a cheap gun I bought on a whim, I've never felt the need to replace it. If I thin lacquer about 10%, this gun lays it down nearly perfectly, and with a few fog coats shortly after my last wet coat, the finish flows out and has almost no orange peel. Especially if I fog coat between every wet coat. I'm considering using it for my first automotive painting attempt. I'm pretty confident that if I carry over the little tricks I use for lacquer, I'll be able to lay down a damn-near-perfect finish. To anybody reading this and considering the gun; Buy it and use it. Give yourself some time with it to learn its needs, don't try anything too serious until you know the gun well. But I think if you're patient and give it a chance, you'll be impressed with what you can do with it. I build 2k-3k custom guitars and use this gun on all of them. I get absolutely flawless finishes with it, though I do have to do some minimal wetsanding/buffing. But that's to be expected with any gun, even the top dollar ones. Just takes some experience.
@bobgreene28922 жыл бұрын
Did you paint at 35psi? Aside from a good regulator, what (gallon) capacity air tank is needed for auto bodies (not individual panels)?
@NautilusGuitars2 жыл бұрын
@@bobgreene2892 The gun is finicky and sometimes demands different pressures, but that's mostly down to what lacquer and cut strength I'm using. But yes, usually around 35. As for what capacity for auto work, I can't say with any authority as I never got around to it. But I would imagine you'd really want a 30 gallon tank. That said, if you're doing individual panels, you can probably get away with a 5/10 gallon compressor if it has a decent motor that can keep up. I spray whole acoustic guitar bodies with a 5 gallon Kobalt compressor and it keeps up fine. Probably the same surface area as most auto body panels. Definitely wouldn't try to paint a whole car in place with that setup though. All that said, I'm still using the same gun and it's still doing great. Had to replace a couple seals with off the shelf stuff. No big deal. Worth the tiny investment for sure.

Thank you for showing that clear coat can be actually applied in a gloss finish with such cheap gun. Every single time I tried to paint something for my cars, I failed in the clear coat step, the end result had massive orange peel. I have the feeling that it is hard for the gun to atomize the clear, rising the pressure kind of helped a little bit. Never added thinner to the clear, maybe it’s worth trying.
@johnnyjohn80732 жыл бұрын
Maybe you're too close to the parts, or you are moving too slow and too much clear is building up to the point that you get orange peel. Always try moving a little faster than usual because you can always come back to respray to compensate if you are getting results like an overspray by moving overly fast. Practice your hand, arm, & body movement with the paint gun for a while without actually painting just so you can build up a sense of how you will be painting; some people freeze-up a little as they are spraying. This will help to give you some confidence. I've just finished painting a fender & a front bumper cover for my Prius, using this same 1.4 paint gun that I had for 2 years when I painted my mustang's fender. When I was first learning how to paint, it was the clear coat that was the nerve -racking part of spraying. Mess up on the clear coat & the whole work has to be redone.

Brian, you won a large group of subscribers by simply addressing our interest in beginning to paint. Since not many beginners can justify immediate purchase of an expensive, "professional" paint gun, there is a large market for training-class paint guns. Basically, this training market segment serves those who want only to satisfy their curiosity and their own developing interest. This same entry-level market also serves those who know basic techniques, but are satisfied with "good enough" results. You need not worry about leaving the wrong impression about better-quality paint guns. Since quality sells itself, we eventually will understand the need to invest in a gun costing hundreds of dollars more. * 1. Beyond purchase of a paint gun, the next item which many of us need is a basic, reliable air compressor. We were delighted to find your video, ""The Cheapest Way to Paint a Car with Amazing Results". * 2. You spray with a preference for a two-part system, which requires a mask. However, many of us have heard about the use of "water-based" automotive paint by the automotive manufacturers. Have you covered that topic, yet?

I was about to comment that the reason you're getting good results is because you're a professional. But you explained that in your 3.5 rating at the end of the video. Thank you for the last bit, it's important to explain how someone who's a beginner using a tool made this cheap would have a helluva time getting results like yours. And could also discourage someone from wanting to learn the craft with their first experience using a 15 dollar tool. Good video overall, very informative, edited and shot nicely, and you're great in front of the camera. I'm gonna subscribe.

I just blended silver metallic and then clear with a 10$ gun. Absolutely no one except the ones that are doing this as a profession could tell it was made by me . And it was the first time using paint guns and compressors. After watching hundred of vids on KZbin. But coming from spray cans and 1k clear junk this type of working and with this type of tools is piece of cake

I've seen guys do amazing paint jobs and even art with rattle cans, especially those Benjamin Moore cans that had the nice fine mist fanned out nozzles on them. Skill is the big factor to my way of thinking.

The fact that is even works should be considered an achievement. It's $16. I mean, comparing it to a $700 gun is just crazy. And it just goes to show. A great craftsman can use just about anything.

When I first started painting semi trucks, didn't have any money to buy a good spray gun until my 4th week. I used This spray gun to paint commercial heavy duty trucks and delivered good results. Its all about the Painter, but it make the job easier to use an expensive spray gun.

Thank you for that sincere presentation. The Majority of people I know who paint cars and trucks start small and work hard to the next levels as time moves on. It's the same with the tools of the trade or profession. Why spend money, when one can achieve success getting the same effect using a lesser grade tool. It's experience first, then the tool. The tool, then, is as good as the person using it. That is true with any trade or profession. Your video was terrific and extremely educational. Thank you!🧐👍

I’ve painted a couple things with these, and I’ve always treated them as disposable. I’m not a professional painter but I’ve done a couple of bumpers and some motorcycle tins. It’s better than a rattle can.

I have the same gun. Keep it clean and don't expect it to work or feel like a $500 gun. A good painter can get better results from a cheap gun than a bad painter can get from an expensive one. It's a tool. Cheap tools work if you know how to use them. Some better than others. You don't need to spend hundreds for a gun to paint your car in your garage. Just like you don't need to buy snap on tools to do an oil change. If you know what you're doing, you can work with what you have.

I used that gun for everything but primer and touch ups for years! Seemed like though back in the day when I started spraying the fancy guns were kind of unnecessary when I apprenticed we were taught it didn't matter if we had to spread paint with a mop because the quality was all in prep and polish everything wet sanded smooth with a thick clear coat and it looked good and everyone was happy. I still believe that sure if you are a professional you ought to take advantage of anything that gives a better end product or makes the process more consistent or efficient and you owe it to your customers to do what you can. But...that being said if all I have at the shop is rattle cans and my customer wants to trade instead of pay, know that that car isn't going to leave the booth until I feel confident that it will look good, perform well and speak well to my brand. Painting or any art for that matter has to be more about maximizing hard work and talent before anything because if you can do it like that you are going to be a straight rockstar when you catch up to the tech and the whole industry will get better. That's what it's all about I think. You do awesome videos man. Much love and much respect🍻 edit: my business partner just reminded me we had a different gun for clear as well so I guess I didn't use it for clear coat.

What no regulator included!😱😭. I can spray with a home improvement gun, but will spend a lot of time buffing. With my SATA, i can almost spray blind folded , and get an awesome finish...ask me how i know. Great video !

I purchase this gun a few years back just for curiosity because i was skeptical since it was only $15 i tested with dupont chroma base paint/clear and i was actually impressed how good it works the spray pattern is not wide like the more expensive paint guns.i always painted with SATA guns they really last.but this $15 gun is perfect for DIY projects.

I bought the purple for high build primers. First, you need to really clean it out of the box. They use some thick assembly lubricant that gets gummy. I also drilled out the tip to 2mm and then manually 'seated' the tip. Hopefully this will allow more flow for thicker primers. Great video. thanks.
