Hi Brian and the PS crew. Thank you for all the content you produce. I’ve been enjoying learning from your vids, down here I Australia. I was wondering if you have any plans to do any videos about engine bays. I’ve recently completed my first ever painting project in my garage at home, which was the engine bay in my ‘83 Holden VH Commodore (Australia’s GM arm). We had a bit of rust repair, panel beating, filler, a lot of wire wheeling, all Followed by epoxy primer, 2k surfacer, and finished with Debeer COB. I ended up flow coating to get rid of the orange peel. While I was researching and figuring out how to proceed with the help of content like yours and others, I found that there is a distinct lack of engine bay specific videos. The thing is that some of the tips and tricks that everyone teaches on panels, can’t be directly used on bays, because of the all the high spots and nooks and crannies. One big example I found was that once the initial stripping is done, there is almost no machine sanding possible. I actually had two tiny rubs through during flow coat. That led to fry ups when I was fixing it up. It’s all finished now and I’m happy with the result. I’d love to see how someone like yourself would tackle this kind of restoration job, and see how you might do things differently. Thanks again, and keep up the good work. You guys shit on us Aussies when it comes producing good car content. 👍 Nikolai Canberra, ACT

Sprayed black urethane primer , black urethane base both great. Sprayed clear coat , first coat blotchy, resanded . Second coat same. Checked pressure did test spray, that was ok . Third try clear was not even. Thicker in spots. Will say I was trying the impossible. Painting outside in sun. Lost access to paint booth and could not find garage rental. Live in Nothern Ky not many diy ers here. Put on hold until I can get inside. Not as easy as it seems. Did all he said used 1.3 nozzle. It kicked my butt.

true that bigger nozzle tip means bigger paint droplets but you have the ability to close & or tweak the fluid to control how much fluid gets atomized at the aircap or am i looking at it wrong?? i always thought a 1.3 is a better overall size but i also have a supernova ls400 with a 1.4 tip & it’s the best of both worlds for oem & flat finish in my opinion. i close the fluid 1 3/4 turn in from open & play with the psi till i see small paint drops(per your video lol) which for me for basecoat is at 29psi & 36 for clear & that mimics a 1.2 nozzle to paint at a slower pace to get a flatter finish. also i leave it at full fluid & speed it up but sacrifice finish. i guess it’s up to each person’s preference but this is why i skipped the 1.2 setup. now, i’m not a paint expert like brian which is why i asked if what i said is a accurate statement or i’ve been fooling myself lol i’m just the weekend diy’er but take pride in every job i get & it’s been an addictive ride

@@davidg5704 Thanks for the reply. We thought at first the booth was getting too hot too fast and adjusted the bake cycle cause it was going upwards of 100 degrees outside. We figured out our painter was over reducing stuff like crazy to attempt a slicker job. We looked at the history and they were going 20+ grams over. Explains the constant runs too. Sorry for silly question been contemplating for a few days messaging you on IG LOL 🤣 but I sprayed for the first time on a devilbiss finishline hvlp and my air pressure regulator when I would let go off trigger would go to 100psi and when I would try to adjust it it will not go pass 20 psi, whole trigger was pressed. Long story short I was spraying a championship white of OMNI paint but instead of painting the fenders white it just made the primer a lighter gray almost like if the paint was see through? I was thinking maybe the regulator took a dump even though it was new and pressure was too high and paint was not being applied correctly?

HI Brian, I think this is actually the best video you have ever done. I'm not just saying that. The way you explained things on the white board was awesome. Doing this technique really helps me and I'm sure others to understand EXACTLY what is going on. It really helped to solidify all of the other information you have been telling us up to this point. You have talked about different types of guns numerous times but you never explained exactly how and why the different opening sizes will impact the paint. The same goes for the explanation on reducer. I would suggest incorporating some white board explanations into all of your videos if possible. I'm not ready to paint my car but have been watching your videos for over a year now. My car is currently in bare metal and hopefully in the next 3 months I will have it in primer!

Brian, is this theory correct? If you want to spray finer droplets, for a flatter finish, does increasing the air pressure on the regulator do this????? But does this alone cause other potential issues you must control? In my head, it does. These issues being does it also increase the rate of paint in the pot spraying out as well?? Meaning it may hit the panel too fast which means too much overspray so you turn down the fluid dial to even that out, to reduce overspray and the speed of the paint shooting out the tip? I want a finer mist without the spray being too fast and turbulent and overspray-ey. Obviously also without crossing the line of making it spray dry and rough as well.
