Paisley Kilts??? Has anyone ever made a kilt out of Scottish paisley fabric?

The fabric we know as paisley takes its name from the town of Paisley in Scotland where the craft of creating it was perfected. The designs were based on Indian and Persian fabric motifs. The goal of the weavers was to offer an “exotic” product to the British market at a reasonable price - ie. no import costs and cheaper thread. The products proved wildly popular and paisley quickly became a staple of the fabric industry - both in woven brocades and printed cottons.
Well, since paisley is a Scottish invention, it therefore represents Scottish culture and pride, right?
And since the kilt is the national dress of Scotland, there should be a paisley kilt….right???
Just because you can do a thing, doesn’t mean you should.

One evening for giggles I wore a MacLellan kilt with a mainly blue digital camo shirt. My wife took one look and told me never to do that to her family's tartan again.

Ok. Here's a hypothesis for why TRADITIONALLY paisley wasn't used for kilts: Paisley pattern was seen on silks and cottons. Kilts were made of wool. Clothes were made from what was available.

With camouflage, I think, you actually could make pretty interesting utility kilt with some of the pixelated patterns.

Not paisley - speaking of rounds and blobs - but I did make a kilt out of a celestial print with a lot of suns, full moons, and zodiac stuff on it - worked out very well! I call it (are you sitting...?) "THE CLAN OF THE GOLDEN MOONS". I even made a sporran to go with it!

Here is another thought: Kilts are woven fabrics. Paisley is a printed pattern - not a woven pattern of assorted colored thereads.. Some folks cannot "see" the problem until it is actually done. This guest commenter may be one of those folks.

If you want to be accurate tartan/plaid was also first created in India, it just wasn't called tartan. It would be interesting to create a paisley pattern that repeats in such a way that it could be pleated into a repeating pattern on a kilt. I think that would look amazing.
