I just finished a memoir of a Waffen SS Feldweble who was a Pak40 gunner on the eastern front. He recounted how his crew once came across a working and fully fuelled Ford 2 ton truck sent to the Russians on Lend/Lease. They loved it and used it until it was destroyed in a strafing attack by Sturmovik. They liked that truck more than any other means of moving their gun because they could all ride in it and it never broke down on them.

Correct but around the various front in 1944 there was shortage also with the horses together with the carriages. My late Italian father remembered very well that before his town in Tuscany was liberated, in July 9th 1944, most of the German troops was by foot coming from Rome, many using strange assortments of carriages like baby carriages and saw not many horses. He also remembered that the horses was prized to draw around the PaK 40 and it's related ammo and was the same story around Tuscany. For your info those troops was rushing to reach Pisa and later the Gothic line in that area. I wish I could remember that he told me that there was generally a proportion between horses and the necessary forage not to mention the veterinarians, in any cases having horses was really hard work. Finally he said that he saw very few vehicles and possibly a Kettengrad, hope I didn't bore you guys...

Fun Fact: Even though the Pak 36 became obsolete in the European front, it was a very influential design. The Soviets made a simplified copy of the Pak 36 as the 37mm M1930 when Germany and Russia were in co-operation. The Russian 45mm anti tank guns were essentially slightly larger caliber versions of the basic Pak 36 design. It also influenced later Japanese 37 and 47mm anti tank guns that they captured from the Chinese and the Pak 36 design was influential in the design of the American 37mm M3.
@justforever962 жыл бұрын
Pak 36 means it was adopted in 1936. So how is the Soviet M1930 a "copy" of it? The guns are related, but that is because Rheinmetall developed the M1930 _for_ the Soviets (the "1-K" gun). they later made another derivative of the gun for the Whermacht, in 1933, adopted several years later as the Pak 35/36. So the Pak is a copy of the M1930, if anything. But really, both are related designs from the same company.

Nice work. In "The Longest Day" it is amusing to hear the PAK40 with the sound effect of power traverse. By the way there is one or two PAK40s in firing condition in the USA. A quick search of KZbin will come up with a couple nice firing sequences. Another trivia; during the early fighting in the Ardennes the 823rd Tank Destroyer Battalion lost most of their towed 3" (76.2mm) M5 guns so Company A was reequipped with captured PAK40s until they could be reequipped and converted to a self-propelled tank destroyer Bn.

Random note... The Pak 36 was light enough to be pulled by horseback or just pushed across a decent area due to its weight. The Pak 38 was similar the Pak 36 in that it was light, this was because a large part of its construction was made out of aluminum, this weight was much preferred but with the allocation of aluminum to the Luftwaffe, this was problematic. The Pak 40 was all steel, while it could be used by troops, not for long distance and was quite hefty for a horse to cary, so trucks were needs, something which Germany didn't have the luxury of.

I wonder, can a PaK 40 actually penetrate Shermans or T-34s? I have like mixed thinking that both of these tanks can deflect or be penetrated by the PaK 40 from the front hull as I have no clear knowledge of it.
@KixProductionz3 жыл бұрын
it can penetrate both
@jerryudonneedtoknow39033 жыл бұрын
Yes and no, firstly, it depends the angle shot, it's shell was enough, though sometimes it may deflect, in addition quality of the tanks armor is also a major factor, for T-34s with often poor quality, it can sometimes penetrate with relative ease, sometimes not, or just be deflected. Same goes with Shermans, early war Shermans had steel quality problems making their armor much weaker than it should have been. Under a perfect condition at a straight angle in all axis, perfect quality metallurgy, etc, they Pay 40 can penetrate, it heavy depends on the angle, even if the most minor change and the quality of armor from the enemy.
@animeria57433 жыл бұрын
Depends on the model, angle and distance, the PaK 40 easily penetrated the early T-34 models but throughout the war would find it hard to penetrate the KV's and new IS tanks, on the western front it penetrated almost all allied tanks, baring the Jumbo Sherman and British Churchill.
@wanderschlosser18573 жыл бұрын
Easily! Only IS-2 were an actual challenge to the Pak 40. All certainly highly dependent on distance. But besides the IS-2 most Allied tanks could be penetrated on quite safe combat ranges.
@Chopstorm.3 жыл бұрын
Depends really. What range and what kind of position did the 40 have when engaging the tank? If it's over 500 yards and the M4 or T-34 are oddly angled, the shell has a decent chance of ricochet. Those chances diminish the closer the tank is to the gun. Remember that the M4 actually had fairly thick armor on the front when accounting for slope, not all that much less than a Tiger 1. The T-34 wasn't that far behind. You also have to remember that these guns were typically used as ambush weapons. Barring things going horribly wrong, the crews manning them wouldn't be firing at targets until they were positive they could land a reliable hit. Most tanks were knocked out from the side where the armor was thin, not the front. Either way, I would not want to go up against a Pak 40 in _any_ tank. They were excellent weapons for the their time. Other commenters have mentioned the IS series being relatively immune, but when you take into consideration the point I made about side shots, even they are easy kills for the Pak 40.

All AT guns that are more powerful require prime movers OR an on board engine (Rapira III - 125mm smoothbore) for all movements. It is also small enough to be resonable easy to camouflage and deploy under cover (The scenes from A bridge to far show that nicely)

ah yes the mighty tiger/tiger 2/panther tank. for everyone wondering: most kills atributed to them where actually the work oth either stugs or anti tank guns/infantry anti armor weaponry like panzerfaust RPGs.

I wish you hadn't included that scene from Fury, as it is a thorough misrepresentation and a belittling insult to the PaK 40. In a real life tactical situation like that, the Shermans would have been blown to pieces in no time, they would have never stood a chance. And don't anybody start any crap about inexperienced gun crews etc. - by that time in the war, PaK 40's were so valuable they were simply not given to crews who hadn't been at least thoroughly trained in their use, but more probably a mixture of veteran and green troops, to make the unit effective from the start.

The whole scene is nonsense. Starting with emplacing the MG42 in the open field instead of back in the tree line and in front of the guns instead of firing across the gun line. Also tracers where NOT commonly used in the infantry role because "tracers work both ways" The guns not firing as a group is another. And emplaced guns would have the range dialed in. After all the DID kill the infantry trucks. 1000m IS borderline for frontal kills on late war M4 tanks and the germans knew that. The AT guns (see kill markers) had seen combat so they would have waited for 500 (they where back in the woods) Then EVERYONE would open up, the MG(s)(1) to force the tank commanders to button up and the guns in volleys. Those things can do around 15 rounds/minute! And all 5 tanks where within the traverse range of the guns (1) Likely more than one. The germans assigned one MG34 or MG42 per squad! We where and are in love with those things.

1:29 Both WW2 German and Soviet documents show that the 37mm Pak 36 had a ~60% of knocking the entire front plate off a T-34 within 1000m due to poor welds and quality control. Why does every jack off the T-34 so much, it was unreliable garbage, they just managed to make 50,000 of them. Just good luck against a KV-1 with your Pak 36, since they were quite fast and had decent quality control. Even look at any surviving museum or running example. All the welds and even the rolled steel plates and cast steel quality on the T-34 is terrible. The welds look like a monkey did them. The hatches and sights dont even fit properly and are just bodgied on half the time.

4.30 min, ocassionally drawn by horses, hmmm Ze German Army at that time was dependent on horses, all the war long. Germany could have build more trucks but they did not have the oil to drive them. That is why AH started Operation Barbarossa, to capture the Kaukasus oil fields, and not Moscow, such is populair histry tells us.
