It's best not to compare Indian or Paki pipe bands to our Western bands. These bands have different standards, sounds, tuning, pitch, etc. Also, since this is a Pak military pipe band, these men are soldiers first, musicians second (unlike the army of civilian pipers and drummers that invade World's each year). Listen and simply enjoy the sound. Personally I love the high pitch as it brings back the sounds of World War Two when Indo-Pak-Ghurka soldiers served the British Empire.

Some comments are very critical of the sync etc which is actually very unfair because Its an infantry Unit Band and there are hundreds of such bands in Pakistan Army, these are soldiers who plays for the battalion parades and functions etc, it was indeed a great performance.

As part of the plantation scheme, English customs were introduced to the young people. English dancing, music and language began to supplant the old Gaelic ways and customs. Ireland now became an indoor society and much less warlike. As there was no longer a need for loud instruments and bardic traditions
@raonipaes13 жыл бұрын
@animalnt Yeah, actually people used bagpipes all over Europe up to the 16th and 17th century but it seemed to die as the luthiers became scarse and "easier to play" instruments were introduced to popular and classical music. The first European instrument to be played in Brazil was a portuguese bagpipe, for example, but nowadays only a very small number of persons play this instrument here. The french Musettes de Coeur and Irish Uillean Pipes are highly elaborate and complex to play....

And they will say that they originally came from Egypt... The current Great Highland Bagpipe was developed in Scotland,however bagpipes are not a scottish only instrument. Every culture has their own bagpipe.
@segano112 жыл бұрын
These Bagpipes are Scottish. Many countries have tried to create their own version of them (particularly the Irish), but failed to replicate the true Scottish ones, and so have instead just adopted GHB ones which are Scottish. The simple fact is that Scotland made the instrument what it is universally and had it a qualified instrument to what it is today.
@raonipaes13 жыл бұрын
@animalnt You are completely wrong about the ethnicity of bagpipes. Every nation in Europe has its own kind of bagpipes, be it the Germans, the Slavs, the Celts or any other indo-european people, if you search you will find a bagpipe in its cultural pre-christian background. The celts used this instrument mainly for war, from Gallaecia to northern Scotland, from Ireland to Germany and that's the reason why it is regarded as a celtic instrument, because war leaves scars.

Con't... The Scottish instrument was also adopted by Thailand under King Rama VI. Another 'country' was 'Brittany', during WWI, some Bretons serving in the French army came into contact with Scottish regiment pipers and then brought back home some GHB's which some Bretons then copied. Polag Monjarret for example, led the introduction of the Scottish Pipes into Brittany during the 'Celtic romance 'revival' of the 1920's folk scene, resulting in the 'Bagad'.

Con't,...And to say that some old Egyptian reed flute with a sack attached to the end makes a Scottish Bagpipe, is like saying a Mandoline is a guitar or a Clavichord is a piano. The Scottish Bagpipe is a very distinctive instrument that originates from Scotland, and can't easily be replicated, if at all. Just as you can't make a Mandoline a Guitar just because they share strings, likewise how you can't make a Clavichord a Piano just because they both use keys.

man, did you even read my comment? please do quote my words saying that these bagpipes aren't Scottish, because i can't see them in my previous comments! -.- i don't claim that piano is a clavichord or guitar is a mandolin neither... what i wrote is that Scottish bagpipes have their origins somewhere else, and it was you who kept talking that bagpipes (without the word 'Scottish") were (and are) only played in Scotland. Therefore i replied that bagpipes actually come from elsewhere! -.-
@segano111 жыл бұрын
Incorrect, these aren't merely Scottish style, they are Scottish Bagpipes, the GHB (along with the other Scottish sets) is a native products of Scotland, no other instrument on earth produces the same sound as them. What you're talking about is similar looking instruments, well a reed flute with a sack attacked from the Middle East does not make a Scottish Bagpipe. What you're claiming is like saying the Guitar isn't an instrument alone, but merely just another form of the Mandolin, Con't below.

@segano111 жыл бұрын
Con't from above... or the Piano not being an instrument on it's own, but merely just a Clavichord made of more durable materials. The Guitar is of course very similar to the guitar in function, just as the piano is to the clavichord, but you would never call them the same instrument, because they sound very different, it's the same with the Scottish Bagpipes compared with similar looking instruments, the Scottish sound is distinctive and can't be replicated by no other instrument.

I think asking the Irish why they pretend to be Scottish is a more interesting question. The Scottish spread their Bagpipes around the world during the empire, what is now Pakistan used to be part of the British empire, although India has a better claim to be using Scottish Pipes really. Either way, they are Scottish and it should be just be Scotland only, the same with Tartan.

The Bagpipes featured in this video are clearly Scottish. Scotland also seems to be the only country that has ever had it's own classical form of Bagpipe music. The GHB are a Scottish Instrument as are the Scottish Small pipes and the Scottish Border Pipes among other Scottish sets. Using the word 'instrument' as a conflated broadening term and then using the Scottish instrument and just pass it off as a generic Bagpipe that belongs to ever nation does not count. Con't below...
