Afghanistan is in Central Asia, not South Asia! The British Empire tried to promote Afghanistan as a part of South Asia to incorporate it into the British Raj back in the colonial days! Afghanistan is a part of the Iranian Plateau which is in Central and West Asia. Also, the Pashto language is not just related to Iranian, it is Iranian! Farsi is the most dominant Iranian language, but not the only Iranian language. Other languages that are Iranian include Kurdish, Balochi, etcetera. Also, Pashtuns are culturally and ethnically Iranian - along with the rest of Afghanistan's population.

@@selwyncaspar8067 Typical Western colonial "divide and conquer" narrative. Being Iranian pertains to language, culture, history and ethnicity, not religion. Most Arabs in Iraq are Shia but that does not make them Iranian. Similarly, the Kurds in Iraq are Sunni but that does not make them Arabs. Kurds are Iranian. They speak an Iranian language, have an Iranian culture and have historically always been a part of Iranian history. The exact same can be said of Pashtuns and Baloch.

In a recent interview their Foreign Secretary Hina Rabbani said that the current Indian govt does not want to cooperate with them where as the previous two regimes were cooperative, ironically the worst terror attacks on India emanating from Pakistan happened during the times of these two Ministers she mentioned.

@@kth6736 I don't think that's true. Much of the conflicts we see right now are due to relatively modern issues like the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan due to previous British rule. Sure, there were skirmishes and battles fought in these areas but that's true for almost every place you can think of. Also, from whst I know, Alexander did quite well. He wanted to continue expanding East but his soldiers missed home and basically formed a mutiny to stop him from going farther into Pakistan/India.

Pakistani nurtured taliban as Mujahideen to develop strategic depth right from 1970 or earlier on Kashmir issues. It got highlighted in 1979 when CIA joined hands with ISI to start the Mujahideen movement. Americans were fooled by Pakistan who were "Running with the hares and Hunting with the hounds." I feel your video has some gap. Otherwise it's quite nicely done.

It's a humiliating feeling for all of us pakistani citizens that no matter what government comes they always try to appease the taliban regime in Afghanistan,thinking that they will comply with stopping TTP when in reality this is not the case,TTP gets its recruits from afghan taliban fighters and the ones used to come from Pakistan have been killed in recent operations Zarb-e-Azb and radd-ul-fassad,IMO cross border military operations by our armed forces on afghan territory is the solution to destroying TTP. After listening to journalist Shekhar Gupta talk about this many times on his KZbin series over the last 4 or 5 years, I’m fully convinced that, as you intimated, there are an incredible amount of nuances, most of which I’m surely still unaware of, in the continually changing relationships and interplay of the Subcontinent states. Edit - to answer your question, India's nuclear program has always been China centric since its first Nuclear test in May 1974. India adopted a policy of 1- no first use of nuclear weapons 2. India won't use nuclear weapons on nations who don't have them.

For as long as Pakistan remains a semi failed state it will never be able to take control of its borders . The problem is the border is too long and too porous so this will always be a thorn in the side of Pakistan . The best way forward for Pakistan would be to sign a peace and cooperation agreement with India enabling it to give up its nuclear arsenal and unnecessary large spending on defense . The money saved can be put to good use by development projects which would improve the lives of ordinary Pakistanis . As for Afghanistan they are truly a failed state with no hope of any thing until the people get rid of the taliban and bring in more democracy and allow women back into society . Fun fact , back in the day before the troubles began Afghanistan was known as the garden of Asia with a good standard of living and abundant produce foe everyone . Let this be a warning as to what theocracy and ideology can destroy a country .

Afghanistan is in Central Asia, not South Asia! The British Empire tried to promote Afghanistan as a part of South Asia to incorporate it into the British Raj back in the colonial days! Afghanistan is a part of the Iranian Plateau which is in Central and West Asia. Also, the Pashto language is not just related to Iranian, it is Iranian! Farsi is the most dominant Iranian language, but not the only Iranian language. Other languages that are Iranian include Kurdish, Balochi, etcetera. Also, Pashtuns are culturally and ethnically Iranian - along with the rest of Afghanistan's population.

Afghanistan wanting good relations with India does not mean India or Afghanistan want to have bad relations with Pakistan. Pakistani establishment should burry expansionist policy and focus on welfare of its people. If Pashtuns majority land in Pakistan wants Pashtun language and Shariah law they should get it. While Pakistan did (and still does) engage with Taliban for geo-strategic and open border security reasons it is incorrect to assert that Pakistan created and nurtured the Taliban. For what reason? Unless as facts later proved, CIA and the US military intelligence were the masterminds behind the initial recruitment and training of Mujahideen, the front runners of the Taliban, providing them with millions of dollars plus ammunition including stinger missiles to fight the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. Later, as events unfolded, the infighting among the Taliban was due to a power struggle that continues to this day. Pakistan has been a hapless victim in all this drama. Pakistan gave the US its airbases and NATO supply route only to get screwed in the end by both the US and Taliban.

Thank you for the video professor. It seems like borders in maps are increasingly losing any relevance in the area. Indeed, it seems like Pakistan is in quite a pickle right now. Inner political tensions are high, economy is in ruins and now Taliban backed insurgencies.I fear that Pakistan might be plunged into total chaos because of the inner political and economical crisis. In the case, if nation building is your trade, I guess this is where to look for new ones. Because of that, I have serious concerns that Pakistan is militarily unable to stop Afghanistan right now from taking control over the Pashtune areas of Pakistan and in time, de facto annexing the east of Pakistan.

It’s interesting how like 60 to 70% of modern conflicts and civil wars are due to the British setting arbitrary borders and supporting minorities to control the majority: Sri Lanka, Palestine-Israel, Falklands, Belice, Iraq, Burma, Malaya peninsula, Sudan, etc. The other 20-30% are because of France and then other conflicts because of Spain, Russia, Japan, Germany, Belgium, Turkey. And America perpetuating these conflicts. In some fundamental way, the international system is broken. The question is how to fix it. I agree with Bernard Russell: national governments have too much power. Somehow we do need a global government or an EU system at a global level
