A major hurdle in the adoption of public transportation is how our cities are developing. You need to plan your cities around public transportation, walking and cycling to get rid of car dependency. This is something that gets overlooked in the discussion of public transportation in Pakistan, our cities are being expanded through these large housing societies (DHA, Bahria etc.) which are antithetical to good public transportation and I think the reason is because public transportation is viewed as the poor man's transportation or "ghareeb ki sawari", the guest also had the same mindset when he said the person driving a civic will not avail the bus service but the poor man on the motorcycle will. The correct mindset is to have the "civic wala" shift to public transportation and the way to achieve that is make walking, cycling and public transportation more convenient than using the car because the majority of the people will always choose the most convenient form of transportation. A great KZbin channel for insights into this is "Not Just Bikes".

Mumbai public transport(BEST) since 2018 has used large housing colonies and its 45 lac bus users to *award 12 year contacts with bus mfg companies* who bear the driver cost, bus maintenance, pay for the electricity for EV AC Buses and bus users paying Rs.6/- for a 5 km ride in a Air conditioned bus which is now 55% of the 5500 buses on the road . Our BUS stations have buses & maintenance on the ground floor *above which multi-storied commercial offices earn rent for BEST*-a there is reduced employee costs with conductors replaced by sliding smart doors & all re-development of bus stations are done by *builders via tenders on the OPEN internet bidding -so no corruption in redevelopment contracts*

Greetings from Mumbai-India your guest's take on Coal seems just about the right way to go because 65% of India,s electricity is derived from coal plants - our local bus service in my city is touching 5500 buses out of which 3400 are EV Buses & will touch 11,000 buses by April 2026 at Rs.6/- for 05 km(av ev bus) & Rs.5/- for 05 kms(non ac ) & unlike in the past our Municipal Bus service has stopped buying buses, employing DRIVERS & conductors but since 45 lakh or 4.5 million users exist -our MUNICIPALITY uses these 45 lakh consumers like UBER does We have a CHALO MUMBAI app which tells us * how long we wait for a bus at the bus stop/shelter & also whether it is a EV AC bus or a non ac fossil fuel bus*- BUSES are *contracted for 12 yrs* from the actual manufacturer who has to provide the -driver & bus maintenance, fee collection is also from the manufactures who are SWIFT(ashok leyland),TATA & Olectra Greentech (which is a BYD importer). The double deckers you see in London are from SWIFT-A ashok leyland company & from 12th JAN 2023 *after 45 days of extensive tests* around 900 such EV Double Decker buses will run in Mumbai & this system of public transports which first started in my city is in 2023 being adopted by *68 other cities in India* and by the way the EV points have to pay for the electricity used by the contracted companies Finally scooters have reduced in sales by 28% in 2022-2023 & Small Cars and 04 seater PV Cars (fossil fuel) have dropped in sales by 17% -i must mention that EV small cars of TATA and Mahindra have incresed sales by 15x and has touched 45,000 delivered cars in 2022-2023 so far

Coal is yesterdays technology. Pakistan should now leap frog to renewables....particularly Solar energy. The advantage of solar is that all the cost of energy is just in the initial set up phase. once the plant is ready, you are pretty much getting free electricity. As far as intermittency of sunlight, cheap battery technology are going to reach market in just 2-3 years. All countries in south Asia should move to majority renewable based energy sources. Also try to electrify everythin in every sector. This will reduce energy imports massively.

@@gauravipal9518 That is because I am part of the think tank that made BEST change it's stategy of *purchase & run* to *offer business to bus manufacturers* and the 11,000 buses which will be 54% EV & AC will physically be running Mumbai Roads by 1st April 2026 as *per written contracted entered into* Check the figures of AIMA(automobile Institute Mfg association) & you will find the *drop in fossil fuel scooters & small PV cars* and I did not mention that SUV sales have increased by 11% Y.O.Y & are now 41% of total sales from 11% to 15% of previous yrs. Means the users/possible users of scooters/small cars are now taking the bus, metro & public transport rather than self drive(

@@PK-tt5kk That solar energy is just initial cost is *not true* -consider these facts as under : 1) You need to buy land which is costly near cities & while the Delhi Metro does get 82% of its electricity from solar energy -the trick was in getting land owners to enter into a 28 year lease with *a regular monthly payment* after which the actual energy is generated in 26 yrs & it took 01 year to get the solar panels, grid connection, battery storage system in place & it will take the entire 28th year to get the land back to original shape to hand it over to owners. 2) You cannot generate solar energy in the night time, adverse cloud cover, rainy season, foggy season & during generation you have to store excess energy in batteries-so *not that cheap as you first thought* -Eh? 3) Solar Panels are basically high quality glass and dirt collects on solar panels & need to be cleaned by high speed water jets *daily* -so once again factor in the cost & availability of water & employee cost of cleaning solar panels so *again it is not as cheap as laymen & common folk think*

For me the best thing Pakistan (& all the countries in South Asia) should do is ... 1) Invest in renewables !!! Energy is the fundamental block of a civilization. Having access to cheap & abundant energy will itself have many positive implications. Not to mention it will help strengthen the currency because Pakistan will not need to import oil. 2) As the guest mentioned => Public transportation !!! I would encourage people to see how Amsterdam as a city is designed. focus on walk able/cyclable cities with good public transportation is a far cheaper & better city design model than the one based on cars. And anyone who thinks that car infrastructure is not subsidized is very wrong. Taxes collected from car owners are tiny compared to the amount of money required for car infrastructure.

We in India have plans to implement highest renewable energy sources and EVs. Maybe other South Asian countries should follow us in implementation. I would suggest you to watch Indian Auto Expo where we have launched many electric vehicles. Also we have one of the highest solar energy sector in the world. Also Govt encourages industries to have atleast some percentage of their energy consumption comes from renewable energy.

There is a reason terrorism in kashmir is low because inke paas khaane ke paise nahi hai to jihadis ko kya denge. The moment they have money in their pockets they will again start jihad in kashmir and india and then ghazwa e hind. After independence we gave them money they bought weapons with the same and attacked kashmir. They got new weapons from americans in 1965, they had a skirmish on rann of kuch and then 1965 war. 1999 they got money from us for helping taliban against soviet, kargil. Post 911 and afghan war money came 2001 parliament 2008 mumbai. Whenever they had money they attacked india. And remember all Pakistanis worship jinnah who was neither a practicing muslim nor knew anything related to islam but he wanted separate nation for muslims, all pakistani are the same. They might be good on your face but in reality they all are hoping for ghazwa e hind. You can even ask them and with a smile they will refuse on your face but pray for that in mosque

Before Dar artificially inflated PKR was Pak economy in good shape? Why did Miftah have to jump through hoops to get IMF program and avoid default? Not defending Dar but this ia not the real issue. Real issue is Pak debt to GDP is low as is FDI. Hence investments funding growth come only from foreign debt.so everytime there is growth, there is current account deficit and hence forex crisis followed by need for IMF. It doesn't matter who the finsnce ministef is Shaukat Aziz, Shaukat Tarin, Hafiz Sheikh, Ishaq Dar, Miftah Ismail or Asad Umar, the vicioyz cycle will continue.

A huge government controlled arable land is not used for growing of fruits and vegetables like extra land with all the highway, railway tracks , canals sides etc. The government must give this to private sector on lease with the conditions to grow food or fruits. Every inch of land is useful but not being used. It is a highly resourceful country need good management. Private sector is the solution, government must get out from many many entities leave it to private sector with transparent regulations. We need inclusive political economy not the extractive one and the most important is ease of doing business not red tap. Regards. Pir Raza

Economy has to be built on a scientific, social, geo political Cooperation, business plans, stable political climate, humans, Econometrics... fact is Pakistan is stuck in a belief that a 1400 year old ideology is the way out and continues to believe only that medieval stone age times ideas is the only way forward. All what this gentleman is saying doesn't apply to Pakistan as its formula for a successful economy is Islam, Quran, Hadees, Muhammad, Musalmaan, Ummah jumma, Jihad, Mujahideen, Kashmir..Kashmir..Kashmir, Kafir, Mughals, Blasphemy, Usmania, Hindu, Ahmadiya, Yehudi, Behrruni Saazish, Shia, Sunni, Jannat, Jahannum... etc.. Talk about corruption by politicians but not about army generals... cement, milk, papa johns...etc .. unless people realize, admit, accept, repent and take to streets nothing is going to change.. but disintegration is an option..
